What is the "Ekman transport"? Yes it was from the northwest, almost directly onto the beach.dsteding wrote:Ekman transport? Was the wind out of the northwest?

BHUT (EUP) Westward currents
Saturday afternoon, we decided to dive EUP, thinking that by 3pm, the beach combers and swimming kids would be leaving. Wrong. Took us 30 minutes to get a parking spot. We checked out the beach, relaxed a bit in the sun, and watched a patrolman write tickets for all the illegally parked cars, "...

Just watched this, great video and write up. Though I thought the line "(Don't ask why, people in Seattle are just different from you and me.) " should have been "(Don't ask why, divers are just different from you and me.)".

Dove the EUP park on Sunday, 1.5 hour dive, never made it pass 30', came back with over 1500 psi in a HP80 because I had to pee. BTW, the tubesnouts are breeding. WARNING: Sarcasm to follow But I am a horrible diver and will probably die eventually because, I didn't calculate my SAC rate, use the ru...

Re: Close Encounters of the Octopus Kind
I've seen this behavior four times, Hood canal, Keystone, Madrona Point and Hornby Island. The octopus is just sitting there and then out it comes heading for camera or diver and not in a gentle way. Twice it was a quite a feat just retaining the photo equipment. They were all intermediate size octo...

What a good story. Most of the techniques used to study non-human species are invasive. It's really good to hear about non-invasive methods.
And I've never heard anyone be so excited over a bit of fecal matter :-)

Re: halp halp my camera's having seizures!
Formatting on a computer will tell you if the camera's formatting is the problem. If you do format on the computer check your manual or the Canon website and get the correct format for the A640. Then use a formatting utility such as ScanDisk. The FAT used by the A640 is probably not the same as the ...

Re: halp halp my camera's having seizures!
I did find this link, http://www.iezzi.ch/archives/117. It's a long thread and I only glanced at it. The conclusion was jpeg corruption during transfer from the card to the computer. Are you shooting jpeg or raw? If you are shooting jpeg try a different computer and see if you have the same problem.

Re: halp halp my camera's having seizures!
I'm confused, if I read the original post correctly she went back to the 1 gig card. How would putting an 8 gig card in screw up the formatting on the 1 gig card? Makes me suspect something else is going on.

Re: halp halp my camera's having seizures!
I just tried google and couldn't find anything. If not for the vertical stripe in the second photo, my first guess would be that the shutter speed is too fast for your strobes. It might be your buffer, some cameras will let you overshoot the buffer and you will get weird photos. Since it happened on...

Re: Winter Diving
I wear my weights low and let the weight hang off my fat ass (can I say that here??) so that there is no weight on the small of my back. And the weight is more evenly distributed then with integrated weights. A lot depends on your body type and BC.

A second for getting rid of integrated weights, one of the best things that I ever did. Until I went with a weight and trim, my back would cramp up as I was getting out of the water. I won't even use integrated weights in the tropics. Blaiz, I have been in several potentially dangerous situations, f...

As long as we are on the subject... what the hell am I doing wrong? I do an hour or so dive, with wool sweater, long sleeved shirt, long john pants and a white's jumper, and I end up coming out of the water shivering so hard I can barely speak, and the deep, full-body shudders continue for an hour!...

Re: Winter Diving
Fall and winter is diving season here. Better vis, you actually get to do night dives, and you can park. You will need a backup plan when the wind starts blowing. Get some thermal foot warmers and put them in your shoes for before, between, and after dives. Wouldn't recommend putting them in your bo...

Would NOT recommend a Samsung phone. The menu's will drive you crazy. And there is something screwy with the network connection. My buddy has a Motorola phone and standing next to each other with the same network provider, he will have a connection and I will not. I have T-Mobile and the customer se...

Index Town Wall, kudos for the climber community
The climbing community banded together and saved a climbing site. From the PI, http://www.seattlepi.com/local/426994_INDEX19.html. "Climbers collected more than $250,000 in pledges to purchase the privately owned wall, which will be turned over to the state as part of a Forks of the Sky State P...

In the late 1950's the Canadians blew up Ripple Rock near Campbell River because too many boats were crashing on it. Saw a video once at Abyssal. Pretty amazing. Lots of explosives.

Agreed.
The report included barotrauma injuries, otherwise the injury rate would be much lower.

Re: on freedom of choice & the "you're gonna die" mentality
I can't speak for rock climbing, but at least two of these are not like the other in a critical way. Only once have I seen a person have a beer and go diving, but lots of people drink and go skiing, or ride an ATV. The commonality is that all are activities that people continue to do in an unsafe m...

Re: on freedom of choice & the "you're gonna die" mentality
I found an interesting CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) report comparing ATV riding, SCUBA diving, rock climbing, and skiing and comparing the risk of injury. Abstract: The goal of this project was to compare possible risk factors associated with selected High Adventure Recreational Activit...
