Re: Where do you clip your camera?
is it close to neutrally buoyant? Good Point about being neutrally buoyant. My "death star" housing and strobes are quite negative and for the most part I do not clip it off while diving in cold water. However, I do keep a short section of line with a pair of clips that I use to hang the ...

Re: Helium Shortage
The latest supply squeeze was caused by a helium plant outage in Wyoming back in August and September. This has mostly affected gas distributors that are supplied by Airgas Industries. The root of the problem is that current supply nearly matches demand, so an outage usually translates into a shorta...

Re: Dive planning software
I'll have to run some profiles and check that out. I rarely do bounce dives, except for a few times when we thought we hooked a wreck that turned out to be a rock pile. And I almost never do more than one deco dive in a day. I'm not a fan of bounce dives, but when looking for new wrecks we will oft...

Re: Dive planning software
Wow, really? I've never used the "live" version, that sounds pretty screwy. Mathematically, VPM allows a pretty healthy No Deco Limit on bounce dives and almost no penalty for repetitive dives (usually only about a 1 minute difference with a short surface interval). I do the deco anyway (...

Re: Dive planning software
+3 on V-planner ! It is a great dive planning tool (I especially like the gas planning). However, be sure you don't just follow it blindly, especially on deep, short dives. I was doing my 2nd 175' dive of the day yesterday after a short surface interval (~ 1 hour) and noticed after 5 minutes of bott...

Some of Betty Pratt-Johnson's books have information about Kayak diving in them. Used copies of 101 dives are easy to find.

Re: Not that I'm buying a boat yet? Just a question.
USCG does not really look for illegal charter activities as far as I can tell. You are more likely to to get a cease and desist letter from someone in their legal department than anything from one of the kids they have doing random on-water stops. USCG Scrutiny is usually the result of random inspe...

Re: Not that I'm buying a boat yet? Just a question.
The one thing I will say generally is get insurance and enjoy life. That is the point of having insurance. I have a boat, I got insurance for my boat, it was cheap. I take people out in my boat all the time, diving, cruising, fishing. I don't make people sign waivers. I think Novice's advice is spo...

Re: Not that I'm buying a boat yet? Just a question.
I think an additional factor would be Did you ask or receive any money from anyone on the boat for fuel or other costs ? That came through my mind. Just asking for "sort of" any monetary donation to cover the cost for fuel. In no way would the boat be operated for business. I know there a...

+1 on Fischnaller's book. It is worth every penny even for paying out-of-print. Mine is duct taped together from overuse. :) I have found the corrections to be spot on accurate as recently as just 2 weekends ago. Fishnaller's book is definitely the Northwest Diver's Bible. He worked really hard to ...

We T'd right, then took the 2nd jump right and went to the end of that line. Very cool video! You picked one of the lines that I have not done yet! It is called "Mr. Furry Balls" (I didn't name it and no, I am not making that up). Now that I've seen the video, I know how they came up with...

According to my Navigation/GPS unit, the buoy near the Tolmie Barges is 1000 - 1200 feet from shore. So that's less than 1/4 mile, but a Looooooonnnggg Swimmmm!Jeff Pack wrote:how far is considered a long swim?

I've lived in Olympia for a year and I still haven't been to this site. Hi Matthew, Hopefully you'll find a dive buddy/victim and have an awesome dive/epic swim out to the barges at Tolmie. We usually consider Tolmie to be a boat dive but some people do like the exercise! :angelblue: After your div...

Since Scott's actually taken training on the razor hopefully he'll call me a moron if what I say here is wrong. You should know that the only people I really call Morons are the ones that seem to forget their brains when they get behind the wheel on the freeway (and those that stop at green lights ...

Re: Sidemount Cave Diving in Mexico
Why do you think the Razor wouldn't work well in Cold Water? It does come with its own wing now. Dual bladder. 45 pounds of lift each. Is that what you had on your harness in Mexico? Yes, I was diving the dual-bladder Bat Wing in Mexico. There is plenty of lift and the harness would certainly be ad...

Re: Sidemount Cave Diving in Mexico
Hi Scott. May I ask if you liked the Razor? Was there anything you disliked about it? I'm in the process of deciding which sidemount rig to buy and the Razor is on the top of my very short list. Btw, great pics :) Cheers. I did like it for diving Mexico Caves. I do not think it would work very well...

Re: How we spent our Thanksgiving
Interesting to note how differently the stages trim when empty, versus at the beginning of the video, when they were full. This might be an advantage to sidemount, where they ride pretty much alongside (on top of) your main cylinders. One of the "tricks" I learned this time is that when t...

Re: Sidemount Cave Diving in Mexico
Fantastic! Looks like you trained your buddy to hold his breath properly for the photographs. :neener: I usually wait for them to exhale and the bubbles to reach the ceiling before hitting the shutter release on the camera, but it does help a lot when the model holds their breath. They know the pic...

Sidemount Cave Diving in Mexico

We spent three days in a Sidemount Class, learning how to Cave Dive using a sidemount gear configuration (Razor harness), and then several days of awesome diving to get comfortable going through really small restrictions be...

Hey everyone. I have a condemned hp 100 that I want to make into a holding tank for my compressor. I have a large Emglo contractors compressor I use for construction. Re: i saw Boydski on tv!
For me the funniest part of that show is that there are six or seven people (including Laurynn/Seainggreen) hiding on the floor of the cabin so they are "out of sight" of the cameras. It might look like it was just Don and I diving with Laurynn, but there were a whole lot of warm bodies (a...

Re: Tank tumbleing?
Long story short. A friend of mine adopted a 3 year old HP steel tank from a diver who neglected it. Now everytime it gets VIPed, it needs a tumble. His other tanks are fine, but he takes very good care of them. What gives? The vast majority of the rust that I see in steel tanks is the result of fi...
