FS: Sea & Sea MDX d300

I recently purchased a Sea & Sea housing for the Nikon d7100 and I am selling my housing for the Nikon d300. Functionally, the housing is in excellent condition and has many more years of life left. Aesthetically, the housing has been used a lot and it looks it with some wear on the anodized fin...

Re: Looking for a G10...

I have a used G10 that isn't being used now. Right now it seems to work, but there was a period to time where the lens wouldn't come in/out when the camera was turned on/off. It would randomly get stuck in one position or the other. It seems to have resolved itself and work now, but I don't know why...

Re: close-up options for G12

The only real advantage I have found is that they allow you to be farther away from the subject thus reducing the shadow factor from the housing. At 2 to 4 hundred dollars is it worth it? I would recommend going down to Optical Ocean sales with your camera and housing and trying them out before buy...

Re: close-up options for G12

I am a big believer in the Subsee +10. I used the Inon for a while before, but after using the Subsee I won't go back. The optics of the Subsee are outstanding and it is easier to auto focus through than the Inon and other cheap options. The adapters also make it very easy to flip it on and off. Wit...

Re: Giant Pacific Octopus mating?

I think I saw the same two Octopus as you. It wasn't apparent to me that they had dug a hole. I was surprised how close they were to each other, but didn't witness them interacting with each other.

Re: First shots on the new camera body

From test shots I have seen online, the Sigma 15 is much sharper than the Tokina 10-17. On a d800 you will have better resolved detail in your photo even after cropping with the Sigma than you will get with the Tokina/TC. So you get your zoom in post.

Amphipods and stuff

I got a picture in the Inian Islands in Alaska that had some cool surprises when viewing the photo close up. Here is the original: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8481/8253387478_4b37405145_c.jpg and here I blew up the portion with the square around it: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8062/8253386150_fb...

Hammerhead Shark

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7059/6914796983_40d8211801_z.jpg While swimming along a steep slope about 60 feet deep at Wolf Island in the Galapagos Islands, I saw this shark circling around a cleaning station up the slope in about 20 feet of water. I saw a large boulder in 30 feet of water that I ...

Re: UW Photo double-feature (web articles)

In my opinion it can go either way. Indra Swari is an award winning photographer who makes beautiful photos often using a tiny DOF for her macro photos. Part of her talent is an ability to pull off a photo where only the tiniest sliver is in focus yet still make it a very appealing photo. Large DOF ...

Photos from Solomon Islands

In August I did a ten day trip aboard the Bilikiki in the Solomon Islands. I was very lucky to have only six guests aboard the boat for my trip. It made for a very spacious and luxerious trip. The Bilikiki offered five dives per day most days, but often four was enough for me. Highlights of the trip...

Re: Ikelite strobe firing problem

Is there a repeating pattern to the exposures (eg first underexposed, then over exposed, then properly exposed) or is it totally random? If there is a pattern, I suspect your camera accidentally got put into exposure bracketing. If there is no pattern, then it could be the sync cord, the strobe, or ...

Re: trying out a dual strobe setup

Good photos. What camera/lens are you using for wide angle? One suggestion--In the posted w/a pics the corners look a bit soft. You might think about (a) shooting at smaller apertures (b) adding a diopter to the lens. Depending on the lens, either of those things could add a tiny bit more polish to ...

Great photos Lucas!! Anilao is on the top of my list, along with Apo Island and Tubattaha Reef. Hi Pez, We are in Dauin right now, a twenty minute boat ride from Apo Island. This is the my third time to Dauin, and while I prefer to do most of my diving at the muck sites in Dauin, we will certainly ...

Re: How do I get a nice green background?

I really think you should try Shutter Prioirty and shoot 1/30 - 1/60. This will let the camera control the apeture along with you TTL system. Setting you apeture to 2.8 is going to result in your TTL flash being damped down and won't make the desired impact on the background. Agreed. There are a lo...

Re: How do I get a nice green background?

If you are using a strobe at a relatively powerful setting, experiment with very slllloooooowwww shutter speeds for really strong greens. On dark days, I will shoot as slow as 1/15, 1/10, even 1/8. You will be surprised at how the strobe will 'freeze' any action in the foreground and the long shutte...

Re: first pics for me w/ my G10

One more thing... The port casts a shadow on the lower right part of the photo. Therefore, I tried to position the subject in the upper left part for the frame. Not too far because it will be overexposed but toward the upper left corner of the frame. My wife has a G10 and while she now has a strobe...

Anilao, Philippines

I am currently in Anilao diving with my wife. Today was our last day here, and it has been terrific. The set can be see...

Re: Single Strobe Positioning

The other thing I would add is try to hit your subject with edge of light coming from your strobe. Remember that your strobe puts out a cone of light that expands in size and decreases in intensity as it moves away from the strobe. Whether the strobe is coming from above or from the side you want th...

Re: Photos from Ambon, Indonesia

Thanks Bob. I have a Nikon d300 in a Sea&Sea housing with Ikelite strobes. Most of my pics in Ambon were taken with a 105mm Nikon lens and often with a SubSee +10 macro lens. The diving in Ambon is most similar to Lembeh. Like lembeh there is a lot a trash in the water from the nearby town, but ...

Re: Sharpeye Macro Lens

As mentioned above, your camera will focus very close if you don't zoom in. Typically the more you zoom in the more you have to back up to obtain focus--in the process losing magnification. Adding a 'macro lens' or a diopter will allow you to both zoom and and get close. If image quality is importan...
