Re: What's this one?
I'm actually gonna say that's a pacific staghorn sculpin. The plainfin midshipman has rows of "buttons" all over the place, If you look at the picture, the plainfin midshipman has a bunch on it's operculum, and along it's back. (The ones giving it it's name are actually on it's belly thoug...

I'm gonna guess a slender cockscomb, but I wouldn't know the diff between a slender cockscomb and a high cockscomb without a drug test.

Mukilteo fuel dock, today. Viz was less than five feet. Reportedly, it opened up when you got deeper than 60, but my computer was acting up, and I wasn't willing to go that deep.
Total bottom time: a few minutes.
BAH.

Re: anyone want to dive friday morning 12/30/2011
Hey, if you wanted to do Redondo friday morning, I would be up for that. I wanted to check out one of Dusty's lights, and he said you'd be interested in that too, so it would mean less trips for him, and we get to check out new gear.

Possible ciona savignyi at Cove 2
I think this might be a Ciona Savignyi, seen at Cove 2 on the pilings near the Honey Bear: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6592607861_ed901a452d_z.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/fnerg/6592607861/in/photostream Is there a process for reporting these, or should I just do a REEF survey for cove 2,...

Can lights
RESOLVED: I want a can light. UP IN THE AIR/OPEN TO DEBATE/FLAMEWARS/MULTI-DECADE FEUDS Which light do I want? My budget limit is around $600-$700. I'll be using it for tech diving when I save up enough for the rest of the gear and classes, and it'd be nice to be able to use it for a focus light, me...

I'm in the middle of that Diver Down book now. Holy grim, batman! Nothing like spending a few hours reading accident reports to put you in a weird state of mind.

Anyone want to dive tuesday in West Seattle?
Anytime during the day at Cove 2, or in the evening at Alki junkyard, (Slack at about 6:30) would be great. I've got a new camera setup to test out, so I'd be taking it slow.

Juggling a dive light and camera/strobe
N00b question here: I just got a proper strobe for my camera, having never used something like this, how do you juggle a dive light and a camera/strobe? I've seen some just use a focus light for a dive light, and I've seen one guy tape a regular dive light to the strobe. How do you deal?

If you turn the sound up, you can hear the little octo yelling "WOOOOOO, I'M FREEDIVING!!" in octopus.

Mystery critter
So today at Cove 2, while on my safety stop, I saw a critter that looked sorta like the mantle of a stubby squid without the tentacles or eyes, but with really long, flapping wings. It was tiny, about the size of a small lumpsucker. I'm guessing some sort of nudibranch, (It definitely was not a hood...

No prob! I actually hope to be turning in some Hawaiian REEF surveys next week. I saw the site of that group that does the snorkel surveys on Waikiki beach, and hope to take their fish ID class on saturday.

Re: Unidentified flatfish and shrimp
W00t! Thanks Greg!
Horned Shrimp blend into the background way too much. I actually turned the contrast up on that picture a huge amount. Next time, I may take a piece of kelp along to provide a decent backdrop for little blend-ey guys like that.
