I love your shots. The broken tripod produced a really neat effect.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
A common cycle for beaches consists of erosion of during winter storms followed by deposition from river sediments during spring runoffs. Whidbey Island suffers from having no rivers to recharge the sediment, so you have only half of the cycle. Some of your beaches are sustained from erosion of adja...

Re: US Supreme Court may hear case regarding beach access
Roxndox and Nwbrewer are both right, it is complicated and unsettled. The property description on my deed says my property runs out into the bay, gray whales feed in the sand that this deed says is mine. However, the local tribes claim their treaty gives them the tideland up to the mean tide, which ...

Re: Scattering remains?
Wow. You have my sympathy. I still miss my dad decades after he passed. I have scattered remains several times, mostly off Navy ships but most recently off a Washington State ferry. I don't think the three mile rule applies to cremains. We were required to use a special biodegradable container when ...

Jan: I have never dived Holmes Harbor, but I have some pleasant memories of evenings at anchor there. I seem to remember that you found some sand dollars there once. Am I right? And Merry Christmas to you as well.

The color specific name leads us astray, since they are capable of changing their color to match their surroundings. This fish does not want to be found.

Chris: There is a spot in Haro Strait that we called Secret Reef. It offered much the same, lingcod and rockfish. It's good to see divers are still seeking out those spots.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
I'm glad you're still posting. Since I gave up diving, the pictures from the members of the board are my opportunity to "look under the tent". I still watch sea critters, mostly whales. I watched a gray whale feeding yesterday. I doubt that I will ever see a "flying slug" again e...

Rich: I am so relieved to hear from you. Take heart. Yesterday I went to the gym and worked out with a friend who had the same surgery over twenty years ago. He's 88 years old and does a full circuit with the weights then walks a mile and a half. Hang in there.

Few sights from my cruise in British Columbia/ And no, I did not pay 461,500 dollars per week plus expenses. But I did snorkel close to it, looking under the floating docks for critters ... :) :) :) Jan, In cruising BC waters in my own boats for nearly half a century, I realized I would never trade...

I am awestruck. When I mentioned your pictures to a prominent local diver (you would recognize his name), he said, "That is why I don't post my pictures anymore. The people on NWdiveclub website are just too good."

Some friends of mine had a really cool (and rare!) encounter with a breaching humpback in the middle of Bellingham Bay yesterday afternoon. I'm wondering if it was the same one you spotted in the pass. Wow. Photographing a breaching humpback still eludes me. The appearance of humpbacks is one of th...

Whale report
As I type this a Gray Whale spouts in front of my house. While grays are common, their presence at this time of year isn't. With climate change, we have also seen a change in whale behavior. A lone gray was feeding in front of my home when I left yesterday to go whale watching in the San Juans. For ...

The craters in the mud look like the holes left by gray whales when they feed. They can be in amazingly shallow water. Have you seen grays in Samish Bay/Chuckanut waters?
