Re: Dive Lights
So go ahead and walk through swapping hands while holding a 2h camera and strobes. Sure you can clip it, juggle your camera, wrap it around your neck, or try some arm/camera contortion. Or use a pistol grip that allows 360 degree control of light with nothing more than the movement of a couple of fi...

Re: Dive Lights
Suffice to say a loose hanging grip/setup is a far more flexible when you need to use both hands and the light itself. I know this from operating a 2-handed camera rig that would require some pretty interesting contortionist maneuvers if I used a goodman grip the way it's meant to be used. It's good...

Re: Dive Lights
For a great all-around dive light, you can't beat the UK C8 LED+. Burn time last just shy of forever, and they have a perfect beam spread that works for just about any diving condition anywhere. They're also very rugged. Canister lights aren't for everyone, and an ultra-tight and bright beam isn't n...

Philippines 2011
Dive travel is great by itself, but it's elevated into the rare when traveling friends. This trip, I had the luck of traveling with such a group to the Philippines. First up was my usual, solo routine of getting settled in: a whirlwind tour of the initial destination, Manila. Waking after a few hour...

Re: drysuit gloves: opinions anyone?
Nice. Looks like you have a much higher quality and more robust solution. Did you make the additional groove to prevent the ring from moving around inside the seal? I haven't had much problems with wear against the seal. The wear with the rings actually seemed significantly less than normal wear (wi...

Re: drysuit gloves: opinions anyone?
That why I've stuck with wet gloves--I always hear about someone's dryglove system leaking. I'm curious about what you've done, but I can't picture it. Can you snap a photo to share? So I got one of these things at the local home depot: http://www.amazon.com/Premier-3-Rubber-Coupling/dp/B000DZFVYM ...

Re: drysuit gloves: opinions anyone?
This is personal observation, but it seems on just about every trip, someone’s locking ring system floods. Doesn’t matter which brand, the locking systems just seem prone to flooding. I made my own pullover system. $6 rubber plumbing coupling cut in half, put each half inside a latex wrist seal, and...

Re: Thailand
As others have mentioned, Similans is probably the premiere place to dive in Thailand. Vis is almost infinite (150-200+) and there are all sorts of stuff to see both big and small. It's a little beat up from all the popularity and destructive fishing, and in fact, some popular dive sites were closed...

Definitely interested. Good stuff to know in any case.airsix wrote:I'm posting from my phone, but I'll come up with a link later if there is interest. The guide teaches the construction of a wrist seal if I recall. Just scale up to do a neck.

Neoprene neckseals
My latex neckseal is on its way out after a pretty good and long life. While looking at what to get next, I ran into some discussion on the interwebs about neoprene neckseals. Has anyone here used them? Would you recommend them? Any particular specifications to look for or specific models/brands rec...

Re: unerwater panoramics??
A cropped fisheye shot is more or less the same thing. I guess a perfectionist can try to achieve better distributed lighting by taking multiple shots (and multiple strobe firings). Seems difficult without at least 100' of vis.

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
Underwater will be very similar to cloudy, probably even more extreme. That would explain the yellow cast. Ambient light doesn't reach much below 20ft here. Below 20 and using only ambient light, there's simply a lack of other color data captured by the camera, so adjusting white balance in this sit...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
Did you get the canon software with the camera? You can use the RAW converter in canon's software suite. It's not as powerful as photoshop, but it'll work. You can also get UFRaw, a very powerful RAW converter. UFRaw can be found here: http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ UFRaw is normally used with GIMP, ...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
What was your white balance setting on the camera? It looks like you may have set it to cloudy. Shooting "cloudy" with a strobe will result in very orange/yellow pictures. Keep in mind that you should be using a color temperature similar to your strobe, especially when you're close to the ...

Re: How do I get a nice green background?
I'm assuming there's not much interest to delve into complexities of manual exposure, so here's my explanation from the point and shoot perspective: Assuming your camera has it, the setting you want here is flash exposure compensation, or FEC. Set this lower (-1/3, -1/2, -1, and so on) until you get...

No longer lurking in the depths...
Hi all, I'm Z. Been lurking on these forums for a while now. Thought I'd sign up and come up out of the depths. I've been diving for a few years and love it. However, I'm finding that what makes it truly a passion is underwater photography. To me, it's a great tool to show the rest of the populace a...
