Re: Viz Reports Thread

Saturday, my "Little Hawaii" at Three Tree didn't open up until about 40'...then it had 10 - 15 ft. Cancelled OW dives...as showing 2' of viz doesn't really invoke the addiction. Yuck. Was hoping someone would give miraculous reports somewhere else... It's a good thing the Sound is here al...

Maury Island with the kids

Yesterday, I had the fortune to volunteer my time as the 6th graders from Nautilus Elementary boarded the Maritime Academy vessel and headed out for a day of science labs atop the Puget Sound. The UW grad students leading the labs took the kids through phytoplankton collection and observation, salin...

PNW Scuba gets some press

Laura James, Mike Hooley and I went out for a dive at Alki on Monday with Denise Whitaker of KOMO. Dan (Romer Treece) was also very much featured...as the one who did the amazing video. I saw the news story yesterday, but can't find the video online. The video of the Governor was spectacular. It mad...

Re: here we go, again

Pardon me...I'm going to rant. (If you only like me for my cheery disposition...please do not continue...) This is definitely about money. And my concern (though I may get blasted for it...) is that the reason we are losing our dive sites is because instead of making Washington a SCUBA TOURIST DESTI...

Re: Open Water Day 1, Cove 2

When I first started diving, I'd already been in a pool with scuba equip on. So, I knew I could get air underwater. But the snorkel... I was so afraid I wouldn't be able to blast the water out, I went to the pool before my OW class and practiced snorkeling. I'm not sure why we teach snorkeling as a ...

Here's one of the videos shot at the NW Dive Expo...the topic?? "She-P" Starring Laura James. You'll see many of the stars of northwest scuba in this 4 minute film. Totally funny...I promise! (And...if you're not in here...but you know you were interviewed...It's not Mike's fault. It's min...

Re: Things I never new until I went on Scubaboard

Articdiver, Just checked SB to get an answer about how long people dive after starting. No real concensus on regular divers but for DM's and Instructors the concensus is 2-3 yrs of work then they give it up. Crap...good thing you told me. That does it...I'm going to have to quit. I'm a few years to...

Re: Edmonds incident

I had a discussion with my students hubby today. He's been out of the water for 9 years...and has (if he remembers right...) 100 dives from the last century. He doesn't want to pay the money to take a refresher course ($75 for a pool session...) because he doesn't see the value in it. Really??? Sorr...

Mukilteo Everett Herald Article

I didn't want this to get lost at the end of the 9 page thread on Mukilteo...so for those who haven't been following that thread...it's definitely an example of what can be accomplished when divers work together. Amazing results for the divers who stepped up to the plate on this one!! From the Evere...

I'm getting excited for the Expo...I'll be by the booth to visit the NWDC'ers...but will also be at the XRay Magazine booth the entire show...so be sure to stop by. (bringing chocolate would be a bonus...) Looking at the lineup...the show is much more like a mini-DEMA this year...so if you've never ...

I'm soooo like Bob!! It's the weightlessness. And this past week, I finally "found my words" (I know...for those of you who have met me, I'm rarely without my words...) I feel like Tinkerbell. You know how Tinkerbell can just hang in the air and flit about, absolutely effortlessly? I often...

thanks for the dives on Sunday! I just went down to say hi...not sure I was going to dive, but since my car is always laden with gear ready to dive (yeah...good person to have next to you should a major flood strike I-5) I went in for a FUN DIVE. (that's instructor code for relaxing and not watching...

Re: Marking up your gear?

I have to say that having my company (and I guess moniker) name emblazened on everything has resulted in gear being returned. (Paint pens and sharpie markers...) I've had a weight pocket full of lead and a light returned to me from members of the dive community. Also had a flag returned to an LDS th...

FBI? No. But while managing a LDS, we did make two calls to Homeland Security...getting the license plate of a rental vehicle on the second call. Both times, Eastern European men came into the shop requesting a compressor system for filling their own tanks, should they be somewhere there isn't air, ...

Re: Open Water training standards-split from "fatality at Sund R

I agree that four dives and "you're certified" is too short. If I had my own training agency...people would be allowed to get their certification at dive 25, they would have gotten their OW, AOW and Rescue out of the way...and any panic issues would have surfaced under the supervision of a...

Re: Open Water training standards-split from "fatality at Sund R

I'm a PADI Instructor (and get very frustrated by the "apology" that seems to have to accompany that...). While we cannot teach the Gas Management class, like Bob has put together...we can (or at least I do...and if it's wrong...report me...) teach students to watch their gauges. When I wa...
