Re: Thailand
I lived there for three years and would be happy to share some of my insight. The 'local' diving I did near where I lived wasn't all that great, but I made it down to Phuket - and surrounding areas - and the better diving in Thailand for a few trips. I have a contact in Thailand that could help also...

Re: Dive site sampler - Brisbane Australia
I'll be back there three years from now Lowell - I think you should come blow some bubbles. There are some really awesome folks operating in this area at the moment (and I had some truly great times with Porthole in recent years, too), and Capt Phil Sammet in Monterey can turn any dive into a grand...

Re: Dive site sampler - Brisbane Australia
Uh-oh... the taxi driver knew my name? What'd I do? :-/ It was weird, really. Somehow we got to talking about the flight from Thailand to Australia (by way of Kuala Lumpur) and I mentioned seeing your home town on the map. (Heck, I can't even remember the name of it now...sorry) So the driver says,...

Re: Dive site sampler - Brisbane Australia
Pete, Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I wasn't lucky enough to see nurse sharks at Julian Rocks, though. Just tons of the Wobbegongs. Wow, that was a fun day. Although I remember being a bit chilled in my 1 mm dive skin with water temps hovering around 22. (Celsius, for you Americans.) And I'm...

Re: GIS-related project ideas?
Thanks for the great ideas. I'll keep you posted. And yes, I'd love an introduction to the Oceanography folks. I've always wanted to spend some time on the R/V Thompson but never had a chance when I was at UW. And thanks for the welcome back. It's been a long time since I've managed to get in the wa...

GIS-related project ideas?
Alright folks, I think I should have posted this sooner...but what the heck. I'm in a Masters of Science in Biology program and one of my current classes involves learning how to use GIS. (ArcGIS 9.3, to be exact.) I have to put together a project (create a map, basically) using GIS data. There's qu...

Krill or mysids?
Alright, here's a picture from 2006 at Redondo, below the pier. The swarm was so thick it was hard at times to see, as the swarm absorbed the light from the camera. It was cool and weird all at the same time. So...krill or mysids? And it's been too long, so I don't remember what kind of swimming the...

And at 8 years they can do a "Bubblemaker" program with PADI. It must be in "confined" water, to a maximum depth of 2 meters. It's the equivalent of Discover SCUBA for the youngsters. I know this because my son did Bubblemaker a few weeks ago here in Thailand and logged his first...

Check out this video from a Science Blog RSS Feed that I follow. Amazing stuff!
And yes, it's from Australia, but I think Critter Watchers are the folks that might be most interested in this.

Re: Netbook???
I've got Windows 7 Starter on my netbook, and I absolutely love it! It's far better than XP or Vista, IMO. I'm an avid Linux user. :spatman: The first thing I usually do is to wipe the disk and install the latest version of Fedora (Linux) distro and configure the features I use. Windoz is expensive...

Re: Netbook???
The longer life 6 cell battery does add a bit of bulk to the back of the netbook on mine, but it also makes a super handy hand grip for carrying it around securely when it's open. Seriously. I love it! - Janna I agree with Janna. I don't mind the extra bulk in the back. It's small enough and light ...

Re: Netbook???
I think with some purchases you can get the 2 GB upgrade on the spot. I actually bought mine at BestBuy online and had a friend bring it back to Thailand for me. In terms of battery life, mine is advertised as 7+ hours. I never run on "battery saver" so I never get 7 hours. But I get 4-5 p...

I've got a Gateway netbook, and I love it! I got it instead of a Kindle reader, and I'm happy with the decision. Re: Please Help With Cruise Ship Diving
I dove Dominica on a cruise once. WOW! It's a place I'd love to get back to for a longer stay. And my experience with two separate cruises (E. Caribbean and W. Caribbean) were that prices for shore excursions from the cruise line were pretty similar to prices I could have gotten by booking myself wi...
