At the risk of asking another obvious ID...
what is this Sculpin?
also added photo of juv Buffalo sculpin, with a weird look on its face. I wouldn't trust this one.
Thanks,
Scott

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
More great info Jan, My question is how do they know these things?? Do they put little ID badges on them and keep track? Never underestimate the persistence of academics, marine cement, or stainless steel tags :) seems like a really easy test to perform... find an aggreggation, tag a bunch, come ba...

Hi Brandon, Nice job, I wish i had got off my butt and gotten to Newport for that :). Glad to hear you went digital! photo's are nice, the two i like best are below. I cleaned up the colors quick. even so, as you can see there is some latent purple that doesn't belong. Mind your white balance (this ...

Re: Rock Greenling
Thanks for the encouragement all, It was a great few days to be in the water down here, Vis was better than 50' offshore... unfortunately, my boat is strictly nearshore, until i get a GPS, depth finder, marine radio, working compass, and further bravery, even so, enjoyed the 15' vis... it's like a f...

Well, I don't think i'll ever find a Spiny Lumpsucker, so down here, this has been mine. I've found them a number of times, but it seems as nothing has gone right with the camera everytime i find them, and they they are unfindably gone in the kelp. Found a cooperative subject at dusk... Was getting ...

Pete and Scott, Thanks for the responses. I've been saying "I won't Photoshop" for as long as I've had my camera, but I've never had anybody put it quite the way you both put it. I won't be an easy convert, but you've given me pause to consider a few things. (Mentioning Ansel Adams didn't...

There are some of us that don't use any photo-enhancing software, preferring to use only unaltered images. It's simply a philosophical choice to try to get the best pictures possible with our cameras and skill. (And I'm certainly not suggesting that my pictures are fantastic, as I don't get very ma...

I'm going to copy Lowell's guesses, as i agree with 1 Quillback 2 Copper (S. vexilarus) Also interested in what a brown juv looks like, seems like the second one does look similar, but never seen a juv... Cooper guess based on 2/3rd lateral line marking. 3 Will hazard a yellowtail/ widow guess... sh...

PS.
Since you guys might be likely to enjoy some nudibranch trivia. When i did this dive my buddy was an academic studying nudibranches... after the dive i asked her about the behaviour, i never got an answer because that conversation got sidetracked when she said "oh, the watermelon dorids?"....

Dusty, I saw the "sudden stop" behavior quite a few times on one dive with those nudi's... Do you know what that is?
It was funny looking...
pardon my white balance.

Here are some spots in the immediate Coos Bay area that i've dove more than a couple times. Coos Bay: (from N to S) Train Bridge near airport: needs clear water, lots of juv fish. boat dive Empire Boat Ramp: lots of crab and clams, surfperch, greenling, juv rockfish, many others- bottle hunting... u...

Re: Brain dump on Oregon coast diving
There are no real secrets to diving in Oregon. Find rocks, dive on them... the only "secret" is finding good conditions, for that you must be on top of the weather breaks. There are not places in Oregon where you can walk in 300 days of the year and expect safe conditions... we get ~10 day...

Jordan, the watermark issue is definitely a tough one to think about. A small bit of advice if that is your concern though... you posted a 3 mb photo. Anyone with 5 minutes of time and some rudementery knowledge of photoshop could take that photo, remove your name with simple PS tools, and resize it...

long shot crab ID's
Well they are very small and terribly well camoflauged... hard to believe i saw them at all... Anyway, it seems that they remind me of something like a tear drop crab (or something like that)... The thing that threw me off was that i found them in an estuary, but also found an RIL in the estuary rec...
