Brain dump on Oregon coast diving

OK, I’ve put this off long enough. The interest on the board in diving the Oregon coast is refreshing and inspired me to do a brain dump on some spots that I like to dive and some that I want to dive. The tricky part about diving the Oregon coast is that we have sheer sea cliffs, big surf (20-foot w...

Re: good places to crab/clam dive on OR coast

ODFW has some great shellfishing maps on their Web site that show where the crabs and clams are in most of the Oregon coastal bays. Here's the URL: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shellfish/crab/wheretocrab.asp With all the rain we've been having, most of the crab have been flushed out of the bays. T...

Re: Need help w/ OR Coast marine buoy info

Janna, One of the things I tried to figure out this summer is if there is a correlation between drops in water temp. at the Stonewall Bank buoy and upwelling events on the central coast. I think there is. The reason that would be useful is because at the front end of those events, like the first 48 ...

Re: Need help w/ OR Coast marine buoy info

Sorry - nothing useful to add regarding buoy data. I want to ask a vaguely related question... what is Stonewall Bank like? Anyone got a dive report or photos to share? I have to think it might be absolutely amazing. No doubt it would be amazing, but it is also deep, most of it is beyond rec depths...

Hi Georgia,

It's nice to have another Oregon diver on the board. Look forward to diving with you.

Re: Pro ear goggles

I have enough of a problem getting a good seal around my mask so it doesn't leak, I'm guessing keeping a good seal on my mask AND both ears would be almost impossible. In almost all cases, simpler is better when diving. My wife's OW instructor said that of the 200 or so students he's taught, only on...

Now that the thread is back on track... Please count me in on this class. Portland is still a two-hour drive for me, but I'd love to take the class and meet some NWDC members.

Scott G., who contributes to this board occasionally, works with me at the Marine Resources Program. Here's a Web page he put together with some odd siphons like you describe. They are odd, but not that unusual. Here's the page:

Re: Maui!!!!

We're already planning to go in March. Otherwise i'd be tempted to join you. I love diving Black Rock. It's an easy dive and a lot of people over look it, but it is loaded with life. I've seen some species of fish there that I haven't seen anywhere else. Of course you can always see turtles if you g...

Why an Atomic in the first place? There are a lot of great regs out there that are much cheaper.

Re: Suunto Vyper 2 Air/Nitrox Wrist Computer with Compass

I've got about 120 dives on my Vytec and like it a lot. Once on a boat dive I sat next to someone else with a Vytec and I started to pick up his transmitter. I just changed codes and switched places with my dive buddy and all was well. When I started diving 32 years ago (back when ScubaPro introduce...

Re: Lobster in Puget sound?

Get that badboy outta there! I can't believe someone hasn't taken care of him. Ya, he's a lot more fun to look at than an invasive tunicate, but he still doesn't belong in Puget Sound. If there's one, there's most likely more and nature will find a way to get them together. Maybe we should have a NW...

Did anyone go to the DOG Rally at the Oregon Coast Aquarium a couple of weeks ago? I wanted to help out as a volunteer, but I was privileged to go to my son's Master's graduation that weekend.

If anyone went, I'd really like a report.

Re: Skyline Wall/first scooter dive

A scooter is beginning to appeal to me more and more. I'm thinking it might be a better choice for sites that are just a little too far from the beach to swim it, than, say, a sit-on-the-top kayak. I'm planning on taking a class before I make the decision.

Calvin, Great photos! I was surprised to see the two photos of the red lionfish (Pterois volitans). I didn't think they lived as far east as Hawaii. Where did you find them. Are they considered an invasive species like they are on the East Coast? (See http://www.ccfhr.noaa.gov/stressors/invasivespec...

This obviously isn't the Long Island in Willapa Harbor, right? Anyone dove Willapa? Its original name was Sholwater Bay. My impression is it's shallow and muddy, but they do grow great oysters there.

Re: Looking for packing advise

Sorry you didn't enjoy Five Graves/Caves, it is one of my favorite Maui dives. Almost every time we've gone (3 out of 4 times) we have had the place to our self. The bubble cave is cool, but the pinnacles at the end of the reef are pure magic. We dove Uula a couple times last March and will do it ag...

When we went to Maui in March I took my BC and in my carry-on bag and for my "personal item" I took my regulator bag that's about the size of a large purse. In it I had my regulator, camera, computer, compass, favorite mask, two dive lights and my favorite swimming suit. I put my heavy old...

Of course, most commercial divers don't dive for fun, either. ... Funny you mention that. I just learned that not too long ago when I chatted briefly with a commercial diver on a non-diving forum. I was a little surprised by this, but maybe I shouldn't be. Does ANYBODY do their job for fun in their...

I've been trying not to follow the GUE-DIR-NWUE-UTD-vs.-everybody-else discussion, but it's kinda like an automobile accident: ya gotta look. I recently went to a talk by Rebecca Harrison who wrote Deep Dark and Dangerous: On the Bottom with the Northwest Salvage Divers . It's a pretty good book wit...
