Re: Viz Reports Thread
Edmonds Underwater Park was about 20ft today. Almost got trampled by a group of Polar Bear Plunge people when I came out... Where's the pictures? :smt064 http://myedmondsnews.com/2011/01/2011-edmonds-polar-bear-plunge-photo-gallery/ I know someone in there group took a picture of us, but I don't ha...

Ft Lauderdale information please?
So it looks like I'm going to be going to Ft Lauderdale for about a week later this year. I'll be hanging out with some of my favorite dive buddies and we want to get a representative taste of the diving in the area. We would also be interested in harvesting some lobster and doing a little spearing ...

You'd be surprised what a skinny man with an AL80 can do. Well I say what many are thinking here. If your going to get stupid on an aluminum 80... Welcome to the forum Shaker100. Checked out Day Island Wall today for the first time. Visibility was about 15'. Didn't find much there to justify the long drive.

Re: Nudi ID Question
That's an Odhner's Dorid for sure - there are lots of them around the Burrows Bay area, and they do tend to look a little murky - either covered in silt or off-color due to their diet. The other big Dorid that's common in that area is Anisodoris lentignosa, but its papulae are finer and it tends to ...

Re: Channel Islands Trip Report and Video
Thanks for posting your video Aaron - totally understand about the time it takes to edit. It was worth it I think, because I really enjoyed the result - I haven't been down to the Channel Islands in years (in fact, last time I was there I dove with Truth Aquatics and I believe it was the first trip ...

Re: The piling al Mukilteo
Sounds like it was a dead-head to me - floating along, barely positive and oriented such that only the very tip of one end was visible at the surface - the rest of its considerable length pointed directly towards the bottom. These are not fun to encounter when boating. It finally become waterlogged ...

Re: How common are candy-stripe shrimp down here??
If you want to see a lot of them, go to Burrows Island- lots of Cribrinopsis there and plenty of candy stripes. I haven't kept track but suspect it's close to the 50% occupation reported by Neil McDaniel for southern BC (80% for northern). The west side of Burrows does have a high density of these ...

Re: How common are candy-stripe shrimp down here??
I'd say not very common - my experience is that they're common in small regions of the San Juans but unusual sightings in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca and inside of Admiralty Inlet. I think several people have seen them at Edmonds, but I don't recall any other reports down that way.

You saw a FROGFISH!! Yeah - how cool is that?! I've seen photos of Frogfish before, but had no idea about their range - was really a wonderful surprise to spot that one little guy (didn't see any others). I thought it had unusual colouration - not that I know what's normal for them, and it was smal...

Pete! I was just wondering the other day where you'd wandered off to; now I know. Sounds like you had some good times and your photos are, as usual, stunning. Dive site sampler - Brisbane Australia
In November I spent a few weeks in Australia visiting my family. While I was in the area of Brisbane I managed to sample three regional dive options - Lady Musgrave Island, ex-HMAS Brisbane, and Julian Rocks. I know Lowell dove the wreck and Julian Rocks a while back - thanks Lowell for writing up y...

Re: Photos from Anilao, Philippines
All very impressive images Calvin - thanks for the link to your gallery. The macro and normal shots of critters motivate me to add Anilao to my list of places to dive, and the wide-angle/fisheye scenes motivate me to keep working on my lighting - simply cannot fathom how you get such broad and even ...

Re: Question for Frequent Keystone Divers re PS King Crabs
A few years ago, maybe 2007 or 2008, I was seeing heaps of juvenile PSKCs at Keystone. Most years I see a few here and there. This year I haven't been to Keystone as much, and while Jan tells me he's been seeing heaps of them, I've seen none. I think it's because my photographic interest has switche...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Generally when I've taken a closer look, the spots that the Pen Points are named for are present but difficult to see. But there are a couple of similar fish in our area - the Rockweed Gunnel comes to mind. Look at some photos in books and pay attention to the pectoral fins and other noteworthy diff...

Re: Low DO2 and gill netting
With all the fish concentrated in the top 30 fsw you could literally take every Rockfish in a given area on a single pull. Most of the rockfish you're concerned about are benthic species and don't stray far from structure - I think it'd be very difficult (and risky) to fish a gill-net close enough ...

The fish peeking out of the hole is a Northern Ronquil - they're much shorter than a Snake Prickleback and their heads have a very different profile. They always have the yellow bars on their cheeks, too.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
I don't recall ever seeing any kelp there - except damaged and washed in after a storm. Things have changed a great deal at Langley in recent years. Kelp is definitely a good thing :) Has been a while since I've been there - might have to make a point of checking it out sometime in the next couple o...

And it looks like Bull Kelp is now a feature there too. Kelp at Langley?! That's a surprise to me. Very cool White-Spotted Greenling study Jan - I've never seen the males of that species guarding eggs - Kelp Greenling all the time of course, but never the White-Spotted guys. Once again I find mysel...
