Re: PNW Spear Fishing Education...
Oh yeah, if you go after a ling this year, PLEASE target on the small side, the giant ones are ALWAYS females and nothing will bum you out more than gutting a ling and seeing millions of little ling eggs inside.... That's actually not true.... females get larger than males earlier in their life, bu...

Re: Steel 72's... what are they good for?
I love my LP72s - those and HP100s seem to balance out really well for me. I think I've got six or seven LP72s that I use for all manner of non-deco stuff. I've also got two of them doubled up for deco diving and they suit me perfectly for deep air/nitrox.

That's correct. There is no more lower limit on length for spearfishers of Lingcod.

Re: What would I do if.....?
Had the same question myself. Once you ascend, you don't just sink like that. Much as I hate random speculation: if a diver were to experience an arterial gas embolism during a rapid ascent, they might aspirate enough water to become negatively buoyant. Maybe. Or maybe something else happened. Or n...

Re: What would I do if.....?
I have no intention of pointing any fingers or engaging in "shoulda/coulda/woulda". But I do have one question that I hope the investigation into this tragedy will find the answer to: What made him sink? He was doing a rapid ascent, but somehow wound up back on the bottom. Knowing that th...

Both Seattle PD and Seattle fire maintain professional dive teams. They are police and firefighters who sign up for the dive team as (coveted apparently) duty so no they are not volunteers. King and Pierce county sheriff's departments also maintain professional dive teams. I don't know about other ...

Been a long time since I did anything below 100' on air. I would have told you that before Trimix I was never narc'ed. So I guess that paranoia of watching my buddy and gauges not to mention the tunnel vision and super loud regs was just normal  . After my first trimix dive, I was like Holy Cr...

Re: Protected Species!!
Cool Jan! I think at Keystone we are witnessing the occasional jumping of the sills by species which are more typically found out in the straits. My suspicion is that species like Tiger, Bocaccio etc are not typically found in the sound proper because it isn't really the right kind of environment fo...

Re: SAC rate?
Good discussion :) It has taken me a lot of dives to bring my SAC down from 0.7 - 0.8 to the present 0.2 to 0.3. I think that most of the improvement just happens with experience, but there are some things that I think have kept me progressing - maybe they'll work for others too: * got rid of excess...

Tigers in the San Juans - yes, absolutely. Chinas though? I haven't seen one ever, but I think Pete says he did. Pete says he has seen one at Point Lawrence @80', and one at Davidson Rock @120' (Wayne Palsson thinks he saw the same fish during a drop-cam survey). Also claims to have witnessed a Can...

Re: Anti-spearos, why? NHZ please.
After reading the Washington fishing regulations, I feel sorry for the spearos up there. It is sad that the fisheries there are managed in an anti-spearfishing manner that doesn't appear to be based on management needs (anglers have longer seasons and larger bag limits, so it isn't due to overfishi...

Re: Anti-spearos, why? NHZ please.
I spearfished in Australia a bit, it's good because you can select exactly the fish you intend to catch, eliminating bicatch. However, that was all done while freediving, which I think is way more legit than spearing on scuba. It's a hell of a lot harder, and more of a sport. Who would honestly say...

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I was not able to find your discussion of 4B test fishery results or the full discussion of the PSRFEF in the recordings - I think they may have been cut short when posted. I don't agree that this proposed change addresses a "critical conservation need&...

As a follow up to this discussion, I wanted to make y'all aware that the WDFW has begun working through proposals for rule changes in the 2012-2013 sport fishing seasons. You can find a document detailing the proposals being considered at their regulations page . Apparently they are not accepting an...

Was a fine morning on the water, despite some significant swell coming across Rosario Strait and a pretty thick fog bank. 35' visibility at Long Island Wall. We set shrimp pots on the way around Iceberg Point and retrieved them on the way home. Four pots out, 3 licenses on board, and the first pot w...

I would recommend an older 22' SeaSport - single outboard (with kicker) is ideal. Great all around boat that will hold its value very well.

Re: New fees at State Parks
The money to keep the parks functioning has to come from somewhere and given the current economic circumstances in WA where else would you propose it comes from? It's either usage fees or state income tax....I'm guessing nobody here wants a state income tax implemented. I am generally all for user ...

Re: Ling Cod slot limits - how's that working out for ya?
I shot 8 Lingcod this year. Between my hunting buddies and myself the total was 22. I recorded data on all of them that I plan to use for future discussion with the WDFW. I've also registered a domain name that I plan to use for an informal "association" of SCUBA and free divers who harves...
