I'm not sure about the coloring for a one-spot fringehead, especially considering this guy, which we found close to the same place on the same dive. Unless the black one is a juvenile or something? </a> http://i.imdb.com/Photos/CMSIcons/emoticons/confused/giveup.gif <a href="http://i205.photobu...

Little Fishie, Little Fishie, Come Out and Play!

This guy was at Wharf 2 in Monterey, same place as the little pink fish and the cusk-eel. We haven't the foggiest notion what he is, and can't seem to locate him in any of our books. He was 2-3 inches long and seemed to hang out on the bottom as though he didn't have an air bladder, but that part is...

The "Big Three" agencies tend to recognize each other's C-cards. I got my OW and AOW through PADI and that was all I needed to do my Rescue and beyond with NAUI. Now, I'm liable to have a problem when I get back to Boise with my NAUI instructor credentials, because both shops there are PAD...

Currently reading "The Last Dive" - getting the history places a whole flavor on diving that you can see at the LDS, the attitudes are there, and the backgrounds behind some of the companies that supply our equipment. It has been very enlightening. I have a feeling I will need to read it ...

Apologies

I realize I went overboard recently. I won't apologize for trying to help people understand their computers, and I repeat my offer to help anyone who wants to, to the best of my ability. Teaching is my first love; it seems that anything I get into, I wind up teaching. I got my first computer in 1987...

If you can stomach a really tragic story, the other book about that sub, The Last Dive by Bernie Chowdhury focuses specifically on the Rouses, their background, how the father and son got into tech diving, and the events and causes that led to their sad deaths. Interspersed in that story is, for all...

If You Find a Mask At The Narrows...

It's probably my wife's. We lost it off the boat Sunday morning, probably in around 15-20 fsw, a couple hundred yards south of the bridge. I don't recall the make, it has a black frame around the lenses and a purge valve. We were gearing up to go in, and my wife did the spit thing in her mask. She h...

Cool. Has everybody read Shadow Divers , the story about the discovery and identification of a U-boat off the coast of New Jersey? I have to admire the guys who go do that stuff. If I was 30 years younger... I'd probably still be too chicken! Oh well, it's fun to explore vicariously through these ot...

Then his favorite place is where you want to go. We've been there with him and found no less than 8 nudi species on one dive, 4 of which were new to us.

There's no question that this guy is a scalyhead. Check out the detail in my daughter's shot of him! http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb133/dwashbur/sunrise%202-3-08/scalyhead1.jpg And here's an angle that you don't see very often. Help ID'ing These Stars

I suspect they're both the same kind. They were maybe 5" across each. My daughter thinks they're just your basic ochre stars, juveniles maybe, I'm not so sure. I found them both within about 50 feet of each other around the Narrows Bridge yesterday (2-3-08). http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...

I'm just finishing up my course to be a NAUI instructor. One reason I chose NAUI over PADI is because of the flexibility: basically, you can cover the material any way you see fit and have total academic freedom. I don't see that in PADI. I can't say much about SSI because I've never dealt with them...

Our standard dive motto is "Think Small." If you just glance through a book like Behrens' Eastern Pacific Nudibranchs and check the sizes, an awful lot of them are under 2 inches long. Ditto for a lot of the more interesting sculpins, shrimps, you name it. That's why, in addition to thinki...

Layin' 'Em Down

It seems to be mollusk egg-laying time, at least it appeared so on our dive at the Narrows bridge this morning. We found this huge mass of what appear to be snail eggs, if all the snails (frilled dogwinkles? W2W p. 109) gathered around them are any indication; they looked a lot like squid egg masses...

I usually look at my buddies or objects under the water and try to figure out how far away they are and how well I can see them. It's pretty much the SWAG method, but it works for me.

According to that, it's roughly 870 feet from shore to the top of the T and 280 for the length of the T.
That explains why it feels so long :pale: It's worth it, though. Thanks!

Roughly. Rounded off to the nearest 10 feet or so is cool.
