Re: Divers lose Netarts boat ramp access

If wishes were fishes, I'd want to have seen this coming. Monitor county commissioners' agendas and let divers within county boundaries know they could be weighing in? Secondly, if ODFW funds went to help put the ramp in, divers also buy fishing licenses and should not be excluded from the improved ...

Re: Need a new drysuit - from compressed neoprene to ??

Might be a good time to watch Craigslist for a used backup suit. Something to wear while pondering the perfect new one or waiting for Santa to come up with the cash. My last backup I bought last fall for $200 and use on beater dives where I'm crawling over rocks or scrubbing at the aquarium. Twice I...

Re: Florence North Jetty

It's a great place for locals to get wet, go crabbing, and you can do it in any weather as long as the tide's right. As far as the marine life goes, it's no Keystone Jetty. The article in the link seems pretty informative. Divers also access the Siuslaw from the crab dock on the South Jetty; there's...

Re: DUI Rally at the Oregon Coast Aquarium

The La Quinta is a very short walk away from the aquarium. Try asking for the "diver discount", and maybe you'll get the aquarium volunteer discount. Newport's a day trip for me, but I know other volunteers who stay there w/o complaint. Address: 45 SW 32nd St South Beach, Oregon 97366 Unit...

Re: Hood midshipman dieoff

And so I read for the speckled midshipman down south. Anyone know what their eggs look like?

Hood midshipman dieoff

We saw a few dead or dying midshipmen at Sund Rock last week but then over a dozen in the shallows at Octopus Hole. None were buried in the silt, though maybe wrapped in the vegetation. I had a couple of ideas, but I'd like to hear from the more knowledgeable Washingtonians why there were so many ex...

buffalo sculpin breeding patches

Bill and I dove Yaquina Reef off Newport last week Sunday and apparently descended on what passes for a buffalo sculpin lovefest. Over the course of the dive, we found 13 plus buffaloes tucked into crevices, at least three of them with large red or purple patches on their heads. This site receives p...
