Re: Seacrest/Cove 2 work party is a go (finally)!

Huge change. ALL the surface and catenary buoys have been replaced. The Water Taxi and everyone else should like it. On Tues the viz difference was nothing short of remarkable. I could see the line at 40' where I couldn't find it from 4' the week before. Big applause to Randy Williamsfor working wit...

Re: Viz Reports Thread

Tues. Cove 2 - My! aeroacrophobia set in. What was that strange surface WAY down there? The bottom?
Last time I dove here (last Wed.) couldn't see the bottom when ON the bottom.

Re: what to do about the snot...

In terms of general effectiveness benadryl is a better antihistamine. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and has creates drowsiness (or other side effects) in a lot of people. The non-sedating antihistamines are tweaked to not (or at least minimally) cross the blood-brain barrier. This lowers their ...

Re: what to do about the snot...

You get a racing heart from Afrin!?! Not impossible but that would indicate a SERIOUS drug sensitivity. It ain't pseudofed-that stuff is an outright stimulant along with being a vasoconstrictor. Personally I think the most serious side effect for recreational diving is increasing the tendency for an...

Cold and allergies seem similar to the affected but they are really different things. Viruses cause a series of inflammatory reactions. Different viruses will cause different ones. Re: Diving after ear surgery

That's beyond my realm of expertise but my general rule of thumb for clearing is if you can't clear above water, you can't clear below. The ear drum is at the very outside of the clearing process. Clearing happens via the Eustachian canal. If the membrane is intact and can take the stress it would s...

Re: what to do about the snot...

Great suggestions from the forum. For minimal drug impact go with nasal rinses. Nelli pot or nelli bottle work fine. I'm a 'bottle' user-squirt device. They have these in drug stores. Make your own rinse: 1/4 tsp. non-iodized salt in 1 C water. You can add a tad of baking soda if you find it works m...

Re: Seacrest/Cove 2 work party is a go (finally)!

Pretty remarkable change. Yesterday I was shoving around a 5 gallon bucket of concrete suspended from a lift/SMB bag looking for the line and had serious trouble finding it. Today, thanks to Randy's work collecting supplies, scheduling the work, and some dedicated rock, rope, and brick wrangling we ...

Re: Cove #2 on Saturday June 6

Good finds. Never seen a pipefish in Cove 2. We dove the Duwamish Head on Sunday. It's the corner bump just north of the boat ramp. You have to rappel down a few rocks to get there. The most interesting thing on that dive was the pink tritonia like yours. That sucka was a FOOT LONG! We measured it. ...

Re: Jelly stings

Was of the impression that water had to be REALLY hot to do any good by denaturing the nematocysts. I carried vinegar around for 10 years. Don't think I'd be inclined to be boiling water and carrying it around in a Thermos for just this eventuality. AND-NW divers always get stung in the face. Boil y...

Water! NOOooo Makes residual cysts fire. Got a Lion's Mane sting. Happily (well, sorta) went back to the ER kit for the vinegar I've been carrying around for years. Get to try this out. Saltwater St. Park_5/23/09 Sat. This was to check out the NEW REEF!!! Got there at 10AM to beat the park traffic. Successful but it got pretty busy later. Big minus tide > long walk to the water but short swim to the buoys. Dropped in gunk to find some artificial reef sections. Viz was maybe 5 feet....

Re: Servicing your own regs

I think anyone waiting weeks for reg service should indicate to that shop the wait is unacceptable and find another service. A number of shops do not do their own service, they send them out. So you have transit time, wasted time, and service time all ganging up on you. Find out where they go and ta...

ScubaTools - that used to be Peter Built. Haven't looked a that site in a long while. Good stuff. Appreciate the link for the sonic cleaner. Is it decent? Some of the HF stuff is just crap but there are occasional gems. I've been using plain old white vinegar for a long time. The class I took went i...

I took a diver class UWS gave that actually lasted 2 days and covered equip maintenance at a much greater depth than most non-shop folks ever get. There is an article Fathoms of Fear in the recent Alert Diver (May/June 09). It appears like like it should be on line at DAN (http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/). I've got some little gizmos that look like very tiny Q-tips. They have a fiber tip rather than cotton. Might fit. I got them from a friend a long time ago but you can probably get them in a drug store. There is also the tiny brushes you can use to clean around braces and between teeth. Browse around...

I don't think I have ever heard of hypocapnia before. In the scuba classes that I have taken so far instructors and books talk about to watch out for the building up of too much CO2 and Nitrogen. I did not think that not having enough CO2 could cause problems too. One thing is sure: when I was down...

Interesting point. Only reason I thought CO2 buildup is because he mentions being tired from fighting the current right before that--I'd imagine hypocapnia would be difficult to cause under that much exertion. Also, I thought hypocapnia was more of a tingling, visual disturbance thing instead of th...

Re: Skyline May 3rd

Some other folks may weigh in on this. I've got about a dozen dives at Skyline. At first I followed the directions in the NW Shore book and info from Anacortes dive and was pretty successful. Then I started working on smaller exchanges. Less exchange > less current, right? Wrong at Skyline. When it ...
