Starry Flounder?
Out at EUP yesterday, I had my head down in the water as usual. And in less than five feet of water, I saw a couple of little Pacific Staghorns, and a bunch of what I believe to be Starry Flounders. I chased them for a while and only managed to get one picture out of all the critters I saw. Thankful...

Aww thanks Waynne. I always try to get excited about what I see. My philosophy is: If ya don't get excited, then diving isn't any fun.Waynne Fowler wrote:I get excited reading your posts Chenari.... your enthusiasm's rather infectious.

Awesome pics, Dusty. Hey is it just me, or does that second Warbonnet; the one after the Lingcod; look like it's sitting on eggs?

Re: A little ID help
Dusty was right on the first one- Heptacarpus stylus. And I agree that the last one is probably a compound ascidian. No. 2 and 3 appear to be the siphons of 'shipworms' (Bankia setacea)- not worms, rather a type of bivalve mollusk- that are responsible for the holes in 'wormwood'. No. 4 is a hyperi...

I don't know. Do you have a picture? Cause these were pretty big and looked a lot like a sponge of some type.whatevah wrote:Lobed Compound Ascidians I think? They're fairly common around these parts, too. Easy place to see them on a shore dive is Keystone - out at the end of the breakwater.

A little ID help
Alright got some more from my ID folder. These are all invertebrates, so I'm mostly going to look to Greg for answers. The first, I think I have a pretty good idea on what it may be. I'm looking at the general shape of the body and the banding on the antennae, and they make me think it's a Eualus to...

Yeah we found that rather odd considering his/her size. It also had no teeth. I've never heard of an adult that was so small before.

Nudi ID helps
Alrighty, I've been really into tiny stuff lately and have found many new tiny Nudis that I just cannot identify. I can't find anything even close to these critters in the books and I have no idea where to start on the Sea Slug Forum. Anybody know these guys? Haven't been able to find anything that ...

Re: Hermit Eggs?
Not sure why they sometimes bury like that. The orange mass is actually the reproductive structure of a parasite of the crab- a rhizocephalan barnacle. The parasite itself is a rootlike thing inside the crab; the orange thing (called an externa) holds the parasite's eggs. It's in the same place tha...

In the same area, we found these Hermits in the same square foot that had almost completely buried themselves. Why are they doing that?

Hermit Eggs?
Found a bunch of Hermits in one little spot at Redondo yesterday. This guy got turned over on his back and had to stretch way out to turn back over. That was when I saw something rather... odd poking out of his shell behind him. It was bright orange and all I wanted was to get a picture of it. Here ...

Re: Sole ID
Here's one I've been trying to ID since yesterday. I can't see enough of the mouth to go by that, but I've been trying to see if those spots are something to help ID it. This one was much bigger. I don't know exact length, but he was pretty darn big. Any ideas of what it is? Here's a shot with his t...

Re: The Hooded Nudibranchs are out at Edmonds!
Take a close look at my photo. If you click on it and look at it in its actual size, those spots aren't solid. They're made up of dozens of tiny spots that look solid to me.
