Where and what is the Yellow House? (I mean, I know it's Hood Canal.) Is this a different dive site from Sund Rock? Is it a dive site, or a place to stay, or both?

Well, unless these were larvae, they weren't that. They were much smaller (literally 2 to 3 millimeters) and not elongate. But I don't think they were larvae, because the description is that the larvae "float", and whatever these were, they were very purposeful in their movements, and kept...

ID help?

Kirk and Ben and I did a dive at Cove 2 last night, where we saw something I'd never seen before, and I've love to know if anybody knows what this was. Coming around the south end of the cove, back from the Honey Bear, we were swimming right on the edge of the rocks. What we found there was a huge s...

Kirk and I had a great time (camera woes notwithstanding). There is so much life in the cove at this time of year! And the outstanding pizza at Pegasus, watching the sun go down behind the mountains, was a great way to end a lovely evening.

We'll do it again Friday.

Beautiful pictures, as usual. I'm envious of the Puget Sound King Crab -- I have yet to see one.

Is that a long-finned sculpin?

Sounder, I've done both dives -- If you're tempted, do the ferry. It's a stunning dive, absolutely COVERED in life (and there won't be a crowd of divers!) To give you an idea, when Peter and I were trying to figure out where to take some of the LA divers coming up in October, to show them a fantasti...

You consistently get the most AMAZING photographs!

I look at those teeth and think about the lings at Edmonds, with heads almost as wide as my shoulders, and think maybe I should stay a little further away next time :)

Maybe that's something the proposed calendar here could be good for? We could go and check to see how many people were already planning to be at sites like Day Island Wall. Of course, it would be voluntary, and first-come-first-served, but it might help if everybody knew who was planning on being so...

Maybe I'm polyanna-ish, but I haven't run into any problems shore diving over the last two years, except a shortage of parking on occasion. I don't mind paying for parking, especially at a site where there are restrooms and water, since somebody has to pay the utility bills. I guess the thing that w...

Used in this sense, a "bag" is a deployable surface marker buoy (DSMB, or SMB). The smaller ones are tubular nylon about three feet long and four inches or so across. They are hooked to nylon line wound around a small plastic spool. If you are going to do a free ascent (meaning without an ...

I've never shot a bag bigger than the three footers. Keeping control of it must be a bit of a challenge.

We saw the biggest clown dorid that we had ever seen at Cove 2 on Thursday. Sounds like somebody is supersizing the nudibranchs this year!

I don't know about that last picture.

I don't think I'd want to dive with him.

Bottom time's so limited, when you don't put the regulator in your mouth . . . :)

I hope they can maintain the same good humor when the entire DIR gathering descends on them in October, and th...

I vote for the more tanks. I'm fighting the temptation to pick up a couple of 130s for transfilling. We've been doing it with our HP 100s, but the 130s would be better. Duane (ppO2 diver on SB) makes a nice transfill whip that comes out about $150 shipped. I think anybody diving doubles should have ...

Alki Pipeline 7/5/07

I was diving with some SoCal friends today -- The original plan was to do two Cove 2 dives, and then drive down to Redondo and meet up with Bob for an evening dive there. But when we left Pegasus Pizza after a late lunch, there was a message that Bob wasn't going to be able to make it to dive, so we...

Just a public thank you to NWSD

I don't know what you guys want from a dive shop, but I like customer service. NWSD was open today. Limited hours, admittedly, but they were open, and Peter and I descended upon them at about one o'clock with four sets of doubles and four single tanks to fill, because we've got out of town guests fo...

Drysuits for recreational diving basically come in three flavors: Neoprene, compressed or crushed neoprene, and laminate (bi or tri). Neoprene drysuits are heavy, dry slowly, and have significant buoyancy swings from the compression and decompression of the neoprene. They can also be stiff and limit...

Newspaper report this morning says the diver was 48, and they were surface swimming when they got separated. I just can't imagine how you could get into significant diving trouble while surface swimming -- I wonder if this will truly turn out to have been a heart attack or other health issue.

I've been over the line once by accident -- It was last year after the big rains, when there had been so much crud in the water, and the line was basically silted out. I didn't realize where I was until I saw the pilings, but we hightailed it out of there well underwater, and it wasn't while the fer...

We saw all those nudibranch eggs on the pilings Monday night, too, but the only nudis we found were a bunch of Hermissendas in the kelp. Looks like we should be due for a whole passel of nudis to admire here soon!

I'd be more than happy to meet you on July 9th, and I can bring you a tank, if you can dive an LP95 or an HP100. I'd probably come with either my husband, or my usual dive buddy, and we could have a leisurely cruise of Cove 2. Are you willing to carry a can light? I'll bring one of those that will f...
