Re: 7th Annual Photo Competition!

John/Jenn, I'd love to see the winners. Did anyone take some snapshots of the displays? Also, is there any consideration of setting an earlier deadline and allowing digital entries next year, rather than requiring framed and matted submissions? You'd probably get at least twice as many entries, and...

Re: Your daily moment of "Awww..." and awe.

Has anyone tried one of those in our waters? I'm SO curious... enough to get one. It's just a slice of gel so it's kinda $$$ to get it and have it shipped from England. But... addictions cost, no? =-) Like Tom, I've used the regular (blue-water) Magic Filters before, and they work quite well, as lo...

Re: Your daily moment of "Awww..." and awe.

TOO cute! I had a 5-minute interaction with a very young sea lion in the Sea of Cortez once, but nothing like that. The little fella in this video was acting almost like a puppy!
And I thought the diver must be on some new kind of rebreather for awhile there!

Thanks for sharing the clip!

Re: Do you read dive magazines?

Most of the dive magazines seem so beholden to their advertisers that it's hard to feel like you're getting much more than ads (even in the "articles"), whether it's about equipment or dive destinations. I recognize that economic realities may have made that necessary, but it's still frust...

Re: Diving with Redundancy

I've never carried an extra mask or more than one cutting instrument (this thread is making me think I should start!), but I generally have an extra computer in my BCD pocket, and most important (IMO) a pony - or for shallow dives at least a SpareAir. I'm a big believer in having a totally redundant...

Bruce! That was awesome!! I was very impressed. You handled yourself in a very non-doofusy way. And your story is very interesting too - I especially admire how you've donated the $$ from your photography to a children's charity. That makes it doubly cool. Or Triply cool. Maybe more :joshsmith: - J...

Re: More controversy over NAUI's photo contest

Points well taken, and I sincerely apologize for over-generalizing what I consider questionable policies of those in charge of the photo contest in a way that impuned the reputations of all the good people associated with the organization. That's the problem with getting worked up about something - ...

congrats on the weight loss!!! (assuming it was not because of illness or something) Not exactly illness -more like "or something" ;) I had a kidney transplant last October, and some of the potent meds they had me taking in those early months made me feel all day more like up-chucking tha...

Re: More controversy over NAUI's photo contest

Yep, it's an unbelievable abuse of the many unsuspecting photographers who enter their contest assuming that "Hey, it's NAUI - what a great organization - what could be wrong?" And then, whether they win or not, they've lost total rights to their own photographs! (Post edited to remove idi...

How/Who to best re-customize a DUI TLS?

I have a custom DUI TLS, purchased at Bubbles Below in Woodinville a few years back. I've lost 50 lbs this past year (from 280 to 230) and as you can imagine, the suit is now pretty "loose" (although still diveable). Is there someone good locally who can re-customize it for me, should I ta...

Re: Wanna drop some weights? Drop some weight!

Wow. Congratulations on the weight loss and the successful transplant! I wonder if that ratio is about the same for everyone- ie, losing 5lbs of weight let's you lose 1lb of lead from your weightbelt? It's actually almost a 4:1 ratio! And I have no idea if that's typical, although I'm sure it has a...

Wanna drop some weights? Drop some weight!

Well, I did my first dive in a drysuit in over a year this morning! It was actually a bit of a checkout dive (I didn't take a camera), not only because it had been so long, but because I had a kidney transplant 10 months ago (the new kidney is doing great BTW!), and I've lost 50 pounds since then! T...

Re: Photographer's dilemma - equalizing pressure in dry glov

...Here's another vote for a simple small length of bungee with a knot. Just slide the bungee (about 4 inches) under the seal so that the knot rests just at the base of your palm. The bungee won't collapse like surgical tubing, so you have a nice gap to allow gas into your gloves. It's also soft, t...

Put me down, and if I'm in town I'll be there! As a newbie to this group, it'll be a great opportunity to meet you all! I've done about 800 dives, but less than 100 of those in Puget Sound, and none in the past 12 months due to my kidney transplant last October, so I'll still be getting used to my d...

Re: Photographer's dilemma - equalizing pressure in dry glov

Yep. You just slide the ring inside the seal. Put one o ring in the first ridge. Fold the seal over and put the other o ring on the next ridge. Done! Heck, in that case, in the event of a leak in your glove, just UNfold that seal from the ring and VOALA! You have a wrist seal to keep the water from...

Re: Photographer's dilemma - equalizing pressure in dry glov

Thanks, everybody, for the suggestions. Sounds like there are at least three things worth trying: bigger but more flexible tubing (e.g., aquarium or medical), pulling a bit of my undergarment through with the thumbloop, and a piece of bungee. Best of all, none of those three involve a huge expense o...

Wow - that eye photo ROCKS! :supz: There's a reason so many images that graced the pages of dive magazines (and won contests) in years past were taken with the Nik V! You're right - the trick is getting the subject juuuuust right in the framer. But when you do, this eye shot shows how stunning the r...
