Our Most Gorgeous Nudibranch Yet
Warning, more Monterey stuff ahead: We found several of these on our 7 dives at Monterey. They're unbelievably lovely, especially when the cerata get to gently waving with the surge. At times they wave so much that they obscure the rhinophores and branchial plume, but that's okay, because the whole ...

Looks like a pair of Tritonia festiva , though they usually have some white markings on their back. Could be the way the light is hitting them. The color of the rhinophores and the size of the processes on the frontal veil argue against Tritonia diomedea , but I have yet to see one of those so I'm j...

Pregnant Kelp Crab?
We found this female kelp crab - I'm pretty sure it's a female because of the smaller claws - at the Monterey breakwater our first night there. Check out the underside of her abdomen. We're thinking she's probably full of eggs, getting ready to pop. What do you guys think? http://i205.photobucket.co...

I got to dive Monterey in mid october and the viz was an inch; best diving...my bottom You must've either caught it on a bad day or gone to a really bad place, because we had good viz the whole trip. Here's the report on our second and third dives: Dive 1: Date: 21 January 2008 Location: Breakwater...

Monterey & Environs January 20-23 2008
Somebody said they wanted to hear my reports about this trip. We did 7 dives in 3 1/2 days (we're dived out right now!), and since I share regular reports of our dives with the local dive club back in Idaho, I'm happy to share them here, as well. I'll just post the first one tonight because I'm stil...

A New Sculpin For Us?
Malinda and I found this guy at Monterey, following the big pipe that leads out from the beach near the breakwater to the "Metridium field," a popular destination that's supposed to be just what its name implies. We never got to it, there was so much to explore along the way we used our ai...

We found a painted greenling with a similar problem at the breakwater at Monterey Bay a few days ago. As you can see, the one eye is completely gone, and the other is goggled out like your lingcod. I assumed he had an unpleasant encounter with a fish hook, since people fish off that breakwater all t...

Yes, Greg's book seems to indicate that the biggest difference between them is the sheep crab's rostrum has a distinctive downturn. Trouble with the one we were playing with yesterday is, nobody noticed his rostrum - we were all focused on the gigantic claws and keeping them from taking hold of us -...

Crab ID
Yeah, I know, it ain't exactly northwest at the moment, but northwest folks are just so much more helpful than California folks :smt038 Anyway, the biggest problem in identifying this guy is all the little anemones here and there in key places. He was in about 30 fsw, in the rocks along the Monterey...

Hello Everybody
I'm glad I discovered this forum. I'm mourning the demise of the Northwest Diver board, but I see a lot of the same names here, so that's very cool. I'm Dave, and I get around a bit. At this very moment I'm in Monterey for a few days. My wife, youngest daughter and I all dive together, which is a lo...
