Re: Socorro - Giant Mantas and more
Can you list the big animals that you saw this time ?? Whale Sharks, Hammerheads etc --- We didn't see any whale sharks (in fact, I've never seen one and I've been there five times), although supposedly another boat diving there around the same time saw one. They're kind of a long shot to see there...

Re: Photos from Anilao, Philippines
Beautiful gallery! The mantis shrimp with eggs is great, but I also really like the ball of jacks with the diver! And you got some great reef scenes. Great stuff!

Socorro - Giant Mantas and more
I just returned from a trip to the Revillagigedos Islands (known also as Socorro Islands, after the name of the largest island) aboard the Solmar V. 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and a 24 hour boat ride each way out into the Pacific Ocean, the islands are frequented by Giant Pacific Manta Rays, ...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
...I would like to shoot in RAW but with the version of Photoshop and the computer that I have it is not feasible unless I get a more powerful computer and the latest version of Photoshop. I don't have a lot of money to spare and my dry suit leaks like crazy so I guess shooting in RAW is not one of...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
One quick add-on note! I mentioned that I didn't know if the latest version of ACR was compatible with CS. I just noticed it says it isn't compatible with CS4, so I think we can assume that rules out CS. I'll look around and let you know if I find a version of ACR that a) is OK for CS, and b) has yo...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
Sorry for not clarifying it earlier. I have Photoshop CS version 8.0. I did an experiment and shot a RAW image. I tried to open it in Photoshop but the software could not do it. Something is missing I guess. The problem is probably that the version of ACR in your Photoshop CS is so old that it does...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
Do you mean the 'eyedropper' in the camera or Photoshop? ) Sorry - I mean the eyedropper in Photoshop, specifically in the Raw converter (ACR, described below). Which version of Photoshop are you using? Is it Photoshop Elements or the full (i.e., a CS) version? I can shoot Raw with the S90 but I ha...

Re: Strobe Lights and White Balance
White balance underwater is almost always an issue, whether using strobes or not. Cameras just have a really hard time "choosing" a WB that reflects true colors underwater. Many people (including me) set the camera's WB to "cloudy" as that seems the best general setting for uw ph...

Operator recommendations "around" Nanaimo
I might need to be up in Vancouver in January, and could probably add a few days on to do a couple of days diving, so I'm thinking of running (via ferry of course) over to Nanaimo. I've never been diving around there, so I'm looking for recommendations! Should I drive up to Campbell River? Bottom li...

Re: Any reviews on Halcyon BCD's?
I'd be interested in comments on OMS BP/W's, too. I believe they're more affordable than Halcyon's, and I've had good experiences with the OMS (as well as DiveRite) gear I've had in the past. I've never had a BP/W setup, but am considering one (after watching Grateful Diver Bob get tons more bottom ...

Great video and great advocacy for PNW waters! The more people living around here know about what's under the surface, the more they might support legislation to protect it. Just an outstanding job!

Re: Blue Heron Bridge
Cool stuff! :supz: I've had a chance to dive BH Bridge a couple of times, and it really is one of the best "muck dive" spots in the U.S., with critters (like that red-lipped batfish, as well as seahorses, stargazers, and other stuff) you seldom see in U.S. waters! Next time I go shark divi...

Except when he has a beer in his hand or he's looking at porno, Curt almost always looks pissed! Hey, I searched and searched...and I finally found one other time when Curt didn't look pissed...headed back to Tahsis after a great day of diving! :supz: 2010-10-03_142243_3536_EOS-1D Mark III_24mm.jpg

Re: Fascinating stuff - Dogs used to "track" Orca crap!
Dogs are pretty amazing - my wife is a dog trainer (with a PhD in clinical psychology), and she was reading to me about how truly amazing their noses are. For example, a dog can dstinguuish 1 teaspoon of sugar in a body of water the size of 2 Olympic size swimming pools. And they can not only tell f...

Re: Tahsis BC - Gateway to Nootka Sound - By John Rawlings
The really interesting thing about it is that we spent a week in the big rental house and didn't watch one single Kung-Fu movie!!! Calvin would have had a hissy-fit! :smt064 so much for that tradition! We DID however watch perhaps the greatest zombie movie ever: Zombieland! Hmmm...a new tradition p...

Re: Nootka Sound ... some teasers now, a trip report later
Two things I forgot to mention earlier: 1. The salmon we floated with/through in the river were HUGE! We were speculating that many were in the 30-50 pound range! It was REALLY cool being that close to dozens of "lunkers" like that in their own element. Although some were fairly tras...

Re: Nootka Sound ... some teasers now, a trip report later
For guys like me who have to fly, would this still be a cost effective trip if I rented cylinders and limited to EAN depths? FWIW, I used only my HP 100's (one at a time) on this trip, using 32% oxygen (which Scott of Tahtsa Dive Charters can readily refill - up to 40% as I recall), and I limited m...

Re: Nootka Sound ... some teasers now, a trip report later
Tried to convince John to strap on his rebreather and sit in the middle of the river but all he did was laugh at me. Well, he didn't strap on his rebreather, but he did end up sitting in the middle of the river! However, he seems to have run into a distinct lack of...water! Maybe he was trying a ne...

Re: Nootka Sound ... some teasers now, a trip report later
I can't add much to Bob's very eloquent and thorough trip report, other than to say I TOTALLY agree that it was a fabulous trip, and Nootka Sound is a great dive destination (especially with Scott and Jude's great dive operation)! :joshsmith: (If you've got some time in coming weeks to head up there...
