Re: Ling Cod slot limits - how's that working out for ya?
So much for "anglers" are selective fishers, I'll just keep a hook overboard in closed rockfish areas... I agree - there's always going to be some bycatch, though I think that educating anglers and teaching them what the environments are like, the habits of various species, and different ...

Re: Dead fish inquiry
Curt the timing is right for a die-off of Plainfin Midshipmen. In the late spring and early summer these fish come to shallow waters to nest - the males stay to guard the eggs and the young, and become quite emaciated in the process. Large numbers of them die and wash up on the shore. Ugly fish, nea...

Re: Ling Cod slot limits - how's that working out for ya?
I see people clearly bottom fishing alot - outside of ling season and over reefs. They are not targeting sole and rockfish are closed in areas 9 and 10. Sure they could be taking cabbies... but color me skeptical. Could be Cabezon - or flatfish of various varieties - or Kelp Greenling (though I sus...

Re: Bay Area Dive shop
If you're heading to Monterey... I can recommend the Monterey Express, especially if Phil Sammet's at the helm. You can rent HP100s from Glenn's Aquarius II dive shop, which is right at the breakwater (popular local shore dive - makes a great night dive IMHO). They bank EAN32 and will blend other mi...

Re: Lummi Rocks?
It's not in any of the (very few) books on diving in the area AFAIK, and I don't recall seeing it mentioned in any magazine articles. Some good info already posted here though. I like the east-northeast extent of the island - some nice steep walls and undercuts and there are shelves and drops on dow...

Re: Scuba diver "wrongful death" law suit in WA
I remember this death, but the exact area of their dive is a bit muddied in my mind. Does anyone recall? Was it by shore or charter? Otherwise I have no idea of the merits of the claims. It was charter, and it was off Northwest Island, just off Rosario Beach IIRC. - Janna I guess I find it interest...

Re: UW Photo double-feature (web articles)
I wouldn't claim any particular expertise on the subject, but I don't see any unusual depth of field in the photographs at the page you linked. They seem quite typical in that regard. What is noteworthy is the photographer's talent for lighting/exposure and framing. Was an interesting article - than...

Re: Hornby Island trip video
Enjoyed the video Aaron - thanks :) I think the perfect trip would be to go up at the time of year when the Six Gills are around and the Sea Lions are still on the island. Then you could alternate between deep wall dives for potential Six Gill encounters and shallower off-gassing dives on the Sea Li...

I might be there if weather won't allow boat diving. Surprised you've never been to Langley Janna - it is a great fall-back location that works 99.9% of the time when other places are blown out - terrific for night dives too.

Re: Strangest equipment failure ever!
Try it next time you have a tank to VIP ;) I've drained my cylinders to inspect them, swap valves etc a bunch of times though - that's why the statement struck me as inaccurate. Just went out to the garage, located my emptiest cylinder - it was an LP72 at 490psi. Hooked up a reg and hit the 2nd sta...

Re: Strangest equipment failure ever!
I just hooked up an analog gauge and it didn't even register. HOWEVER, air still comes out of the LP ports... and I can turn the tank on (STILL) and get air coming out. Was the mechanical gauge plumbed through one of the same 1st stages belonging to you or your husband? Or was it attached to a comp...

Re: Strangest equipment failure ever!
Cera I agree with others who've guessed at an obstruction in the HP flow - either at the regulator end of the hoses or inside the regulator itself. Do you habitually open tank valves to clear water/debris before attaching your first stage? It could be that the "bad" cylinder had some junk ...

Can't make it this time but it's an excellent idea and the timing is right. Just looked at the marine forecast though and it looks a bit unpleasant :( Big south winds all day continuing into the night - might be some pretty hefty surf rolling in by the breakwater - some might do the crawl entry/exit...

Re: Another human foot washes up on shore in BC
It turns out that this one was just a dog bone that someone had tucked inside of an old shoe. When they were washing up with regularity I heard a theory that they may have been from a jet boat tour accident that occurred some time ago on the Fraser River. Not sure that makes sense to me though. I kn...
