Might be able to protect from the virus' consequences. But should we? As the piece points out, the virus has been in the starfish for a very long time with no ill effect. Maybe it actually is a built in population control that we interfere with at our peril.

As far as we know every species has a crash method when it becomes too numerous. The article intimates that might be the situation.
The only box you have to think outside of is the one you build around yourself.
