Chris works at USW Fed Way, he's a good diver and a great person. Chanon is also an all around good guy, I've dove with both.

This past summer I was just finishing up a class at Redondo when someone came to the parking lot telling all the divers there was a whale out off the beach just north of Salty's. I was all packed and in my civilian clothes by then, so I just walked over to the beach where a small crowd was gathering. Sure enough, a couple hundred feet off the beach you could see the back and sometimes the fin of what looked like a smallish gray whale. It looked pretty lethargic to me, as it wasn't swimming or moving around very much. Maybe 75 feet from the whale you could clearly see diver's bubbles ... somewhere in the vicinity of the VW. But those divers never saw the whale. We watched for a few minutes ... people were making phone calls to news organizations ... and someone actually called 911 (like, what are they supposed to do?) ... then I moved on.

I suspect they come into the area more often than people would think ... but this one was noticeable (a) because of the time of year and (b) because it happened to swim close to a diver with a video camera. I suspect it might have been seeking the same squid that all those fishermen out on the pier are there for. In fact, given the time of day, I wonder if any of the fishing folks saw it ...

I've never even seen a six gill, much less a whale. Harrump! I am so envious!

I remember a few years ago some divers hearing one at Edmonds. They probably are more common than we think.

Thank you yelloweye for posting this. I've had hundreds, perhaps thousands, of grey whale sightings. I've never seen one underwater, despite diving around them numerous times. I remember reading about a diver taking his grandson on his first open water dive at EUP and being treated by a grey whale swimming over them. First dive! Congratulations to both Chris and Channon.

A friend of mine who's a commercial diver/fisherman was doing some sea cucumber harvesting once when he said a gray whale passed over his head so close that he could have reached up and touched it. When I asked him how he reacted, his reply was classic ...

"I screamed like a little girl" ... :)

A couple of videos are circulating on Facebook, seem to be one from each dive buddy.

Absolutely off the hook!

Yeah, they both are part of FW UWS and the Federal way Mudsharks. Such an amazing experience! So happy for both of them; but also a little jealous!
