One percent of 20,000,000 is 20,000. That would be a lot of baby nudibranchs.

Hi Curt,
I just saw an estimate that nudibranchs have been around for 180 million years. If they were to produce ONE generation per year then one nudibranch in the beginning would be responsible offspring numbering 20,000 to the 180 millionth power; I'm not going to do the math but I suspect that would outweigh the Earth (at least).
I hope that what Montererey Bay meant was that 1% of the embryos survive to leave the plankton and become juveniles (after which the attrition continues).

Fecundally yours,
Alex

P.S. Great images as always Jan!

After two weeks on the road, back on Whidbey and in water. No critters in this posting, just a human in Santa's colors
inspecting mooring lines :)

Thank you guys. I keep wondering, where comes the red from? Most other Red Irish Lord eggs are more on the yellow side ...

Since the Langley Harbor is now closed to recreational diving, it doesn't matter anymore. Nevertheless, I am sad that it is off limits now, for it was nice to be able to take friends diving there when other Whidbey sites were too rough to dive because of weather ...

Yesterday, I went on a walk in my neighborhood and as usual, carried small point & shoot camera in my pocket. When I saw white plastic bag caught on a barbed wire fence along the road, it immediately brought to my mind a picture I took four days ago underwater at Keystone where another bag like this was caught on spines of Green sea urchins. And I realize how much the two worlds I love, above and under water, have in common. So as I continued me walk, the little camera stayed turned on and I searched for things along my route which would bring these two worlds together photographically. Some work better than others, this is the first take on the subject. :)

Thanks, hopefully you come to dive Keystone many time in this new year :)
My last dive of the 2015 was at Coupeville. Few stars, plenty of Green sea urchins. Not much else...
