Great Sculpin at Sundrock

Post by Biodiversity_Guy »

I know what many of you are thinking: Great Sculpins are a dime a dozen where I dive...who cares about one at Sundrock.

I encountered this individual (I am assuming it is a great) earlier this week down on the middle wall. First time I had seen one at Sundrock ever that I could recall. Looked it up on the REEF website and yep, a very unusual sighting for that part of Hood Canal.

Also encountered a Buffalo Sculpin, another species that is common elsewhere (e.g., Day Island Wall) but not that common at Sund Rock. <ID correction, is a 2nd Great Sculpin, not Buffalo>

Since I don't see these two characters very often any more, if I have made a mis-identification, please let me know.

They're both greats.

Thanks for the feedback! Will correct.

Was looking at the size of the mouth on the second, but obviously not closely enough.

Two different greats on the same dive. When it rains, it pours. I will be interested to see if my encounter rate goes up.
