I have no idea. I am surprised that Yellowtail is capable of it. Why not others?
Maybe some expert here can explain it ... :dontknow:

After surveying sea stars at Langley Harbor, I was asked by the harbormaster if I could
collect some of the abandoned crab traps. The lines get tangled in the mooring lines of
the new floating dock. Since there is not crabbing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Maya
got to work. The traps were hoisted up and after cleaning they are donated to local
Good Cheer store.

When I came across this scene, I thought some worm was attacking the sea cucumber.
But my friend Ron Shimek explained to me that something entirely different is happening here ...

I would love to absorb my gut every winter. What a great way to do weight control!

What a difference ONE week makes.
In bad visibility the dying continues unabated . :(

Continuing sea star wasting surveys around Whidbey, visibility is still not good, except at Possession Fingers at depth.
Starfish keep dying, somewhere more, somewhere less. Langley is showing some improvement as I found recruits
which might make it, but also might die off too. Still a rather depressing situation...

Let's hope the cooling of the water will help this.

I remember the first time I saw an egg yolk caught by a metridium. Several small crabs were also pulling down on the tentacles, and the jelly was beating and trying to get away. I thought it was a fascinating life-and-death struggle, carried out very quietly and rather in slow motion.

While checking the rather "boring" muck bottom at Holmes Harbor, I found hermit crab
which was not yet on my list of Whidbey Critters. In the past visits I found many of the
Blackeyed ones, but the yellow eyed one is my first encounter. It only proves that you
never know what you find on a dive, where-ever you dive :)

I keep my hood on at all times :)

Sea stars struggle continues, although babies are showing up, there is no much change in the adults, I still find wasting individuals, which in my unscientific opinion means, the stff which is killing them is still in the water :(

I hope all the sea stars don't disappear but I think I like the new look.
