Cool Puget Sound King Crab at Lopez Island!

Did a couple of dives off of south Lopez Island this past weekend. Wonderful Puget Sound King Crab! Here's some photos.....

Very nice!!! That one is HUGE, I seen one for the first time at Skyline Wall over the weekend, but no where near that size.
The ocean is a lousy teacher. First you get a test, then the lesson.

That's normal adult size ... the one you saw at Skyline was likely a juvenile ...

I have two curiosities about PSKC.

*One is what one of those claws can do to the appropriate object (NOT my finger!) They look pretty darn powerful.

**The other is what they taste like. I bet they are delicious. And yes, I know you can't harvest them in Washington.

Strangely enough, they taste like crab. They haven't always been illegal.

I saw a bigger one out at Neah Bay several years ago, but this fellow was pretty good sized! Plus, there were about 4 others just like hime nearby. That was amazing.

I am very careful around any crab with pinchers, they're strength is quite ample to cause a considerable amount of pain. A kelp crab taught me that several years ago. :)
