Sailfin question

Post by YellowEye »

Hi
We found a sailfin sculpin yesterday with a huge pink bulge in its belly. Was it ready to lay eggs, or would this be a tumor?

Was the bulge symmetrical? Usually asymmetrical bulges aren't normal.

Hi Elise!
I didn't happen to notice. One side was facing some structure.
Next time I'd look closer for sure. Do the bellies get big when full of eggs?

It was symmetrical for sure.

I watched as it turned around a couple times when Eric was focusing for the shot. looked like a perfectly round bulge. Almost as it it swallowed a light bulb!
