Two Hermits battle as the shrimp referee intervenes. Greg J?

Post by dtodd »

Found these two "splendid?" hermits battling at Three Tree last week and the shrimp seemed to be trying to get in on the action.
Anyone seen anything like this before?
Greg Jensen?

Awesome photo Greg! The shrimp is probably hanging around to collect any body parts that are shed.

Not my photo! Juvenile blackeyed hermits (Pagurus armatus). Either one of them wants the other's shell, or they're squabbling over something edible. My guess would be the latter, given the dock shrimp's (Pandalus danae) interest. Regardless of the reason for the fight, it's extremely unlikely that either one will be injured.
