Growth on Seaweed

Post by Tangfish »

Anyone know what this growth is on the seaweed? I saw it covering huge patches of seaweed in the shallows of Cove 2 today. To the naked eye it looks like white "fuzz", this photo is a closeup. :dontknow:

Greetings,

I assume that you're looking for an answer that's more specific than "it's an epiphytic growth"; and I can't help with that. WAG would range from chain diatoms to fungus to bacterial aggregations.
If there is an expert here it might help to pass on some additional information:
1. What is the scale (IOW - how long are the individual strands)?
2. What sort of seaweed was it growing on (one or multiple types)?
3. Was it growing on anything other than seaweed?
Sorry to be of so little help. On the bright side, when I post something speculative Greg often corrects me so maybe this will prompt some real info!

Algally yours,
Alex
