Redondo 2/10/16 - What's for Dinner?

Post by Scubie Doo »

Last night during a solo dive I had a pretty cool encounter. About 20 minutes into the dive I saw a stubby squid hovering about 1" off the sea floor. It looked like it had something in its tentacles, but I could not see what it was.

Image

I took a quick shot thinking it was a shrimp, I have seen that several times. I could see movement and fins, so I moved in for a closer look.

Image

Even after a close-up I could not tell what the critter was. So I looked deep into the squid's eye and tried to figure out what this critter was up to.

Image

Mr. Stubby got peeved and started floating off as if to say "1) you interrupted dinner, 2) you are loud and clumsy, and 3) I am not sharing.

Image

After a few shots, I still could not figure out what the squid was munching on.

Image

Now I am super curious and I really need to know, was it a sculpin, lumpy, or some other critter? It moved a tentacle and I finally saw the eyeball of a sculpin.

Image

Image

Now that I knew I started to relax on the photos. The stubby settled back down and just when I thought he would finish dinner.

Image

He spit the little fella out. Here you can see the hole where the stubby was digging its beak in.

Image

The sculpin settled itself and spit out the sand in its mouth. On one hand I felt bad for the sculpin and on the other I felt bad for the stubby.

Image

I will report that the stubby stayed by its prey and not 100% sure if it went back to finish, but I had intruded long enough :-)

Happy diving ya'll!

Fantastic series. I really like them when they show behavior.

Circle of life well captured! You'd think the stubbies would grow bigger eating like that.

Thank you Magoi. I agree. I felt bad interrupting dinner, but curiosity got the best of me.

Indeed. I've seen stubbies with shrimp. But never a fish. A first for me :)
