Three Tree North – 6/11/14 – First Dive with new wet Diopter

Post by Scubie Doo »

Hit up Three Tree North yesterday with my new Subsee +5 and +10 diopters. My goal was to get some super macro shots of the baby lumpies. Here are the results…

First, shooting these tiny critters with a +10 diopter is insanely difficult. I had the aperture dialed way down to help with the depth of field. Unfortunately, I only managed (1) photo that was relatively in-focus. Here are a couple examples of the diopters in action (these 3 images are uncropped):

100mm Macro Lens with no diopter. Notice the amount of particles around the PSL.
f-Stop 32 – Shutter 1/80 – ISO 400
Image

100mm Macro Lens with +5 Diopter. Out of focus on this shot, but it shows the level of magnification the +5 offers.
Same settings as above.

And Finally! 100mm Macro Lens with +10 diopter. Notice the tiny grains next to the lumpie. They even cast a shadow. The front of the lumpie is a little blown out, but my focus is better on this.
Same settings as above.

As you can see, pretty significant magnification with the Subsee diopters. If I can get the right subject the results could be amazing.

Toward the end of my dive, I found a cluster of eggs (I believe they are Greenling eggs). I always wondered what was up with the different colors of eggs in the same cluster. With the help of my +10 diopter I may have found my answer ☺

Pinks eggs. Looks like they are just developing.
Image

Not sure what stage these are at, but they look empty ☺

A Little further along…

And a little more developed, almost ready to break free???

Enjoy and have a good Fathers Day weekend!

If you're challenged with a +10, the rest of us might as well just pack it in! ;-) Very cool shots!

Wow great shots! Love the progression of the eggs. I've gotta get out to see the lumpies.

Damn, Jesse - those are pretty cool. From my perspective, I think your second eggs picture shows real early stages of development rather than empty eggs. It looks like there's some eyes and other bio-goo in some of the eggs.

I agree, those are just much less-developed eggs. In some of the pics you can clearly see the spiral/Slinky -looking diatoms that are currently giving us such crappy viz.

Thanks and yes, they are out. I saw at least 10-15 of them yesterday.

I always thought your pictures before were amazing but you seem to always improve. I wish I had the money and talent.

Jesse - awesome shots!

Going small and smaller is so cool and there are some amazing things to see. Thanks for showing them to us.

Even with the right equipment it takes a ton of patience practice and time to get good images. Well done!

Great shots, thanks for the motivation to get back out there and practice, have to dust off the gear and start getting it wet again.

Love the little eyeballs peering out of the eggs! Hope you get many more great shots out of those diopters. I've been shooting mine a lot more since I switched to Fx and lost some magnification with my 105mm.
