Lake Washington Vis is great

Postby boydski » Sat May 17, 2008 4:08 pm

We had a great day on Lake Washinton today. Viz is awesome at depth ( ~ 25') and the thermocline is just beginning to build, so above 20', you get that nice warm "ahhhh" after shivering down deep. Of course it is seriously hot on the surface!

We have located several new wrecks over the past couple of weekends, but most are small, and had been stripped and scuttled prior to sinking. Today we found a very nice old wood hulled fishing boat named "Sonny". It is still in very good shape and I was suprised to find that the rudder still turns and swings freely. The engine and prop are still in place, as is some of the deck machinery. The boom has fallen to the side, but is still laying against the side of the boat.

A very cool little wreck! :smt032

Okay -- You faked that photo, Scott. It's not possible to see that much of ANYTHING at the bottom of Lake Washington!
"Air = $7 to see a lot of cool stuff for 30 minutes. . .
Nitrox = $12 to see a lot of cool stuff for 70 minutes. . .
Helium = $55 to see very little for 20 minutes. Followed by 50 minutes of seeing nothing. (airsix)

Really nice pics, Boydski! You have a very distinctive style. I'm heading out on the lake tomorrow- hope the vis is still good!

That's awesome! I hope it holds out for me until tomorrow! Is vis like this usually localized?

Last weeked we had 12', today we had 25' in exactly the same area. Go figure! I've certainly never been able to figure out why and when the viz suddenly turns. At 120' today, I covered my light and could see the wreck just fine. That is NOT normal! :book:

Great shot Scott. Drop me a line and let’s set up a time to scan the target we talked about today.

I can attest, as can Jabber Jaw and Grateful Diver, to the great visibility in the lake today. A group of us were diving the “Dawn”, south of where Scott’s group was working the Lake. Sounds like our group and Scott have been doing the same thing. We have located SEVERAL new things in the lake. We have been side scanning or diving the lake several days a week for quite some time now and this is the best visibility we have had. We are trying to video and document all the items that rest on the bottom. Even at rate we are diving the lake, it will take a very long time. We have located literally HUNDREDS of targets. It’s a slow process sorting thought the “known wrecks” and the “new ones”, because we stared from ground zero. Meaning we had no GPS coordinates for “known wrecks” before we started our project last year. We have been cataloging our travels at http://www.pugetsounddivers.com.

Here are a few our side scan images.

The first one is a 45 ft fishing boat we found in 150 ft (All wood, decent shape). The second image is of the “new Minesweeper”. It has a shadow that show the structure of the ship in great detail. When we dove this last July; We had no clue it was a third one. We just thought it was one of the other two ships that everyone already knew about. We never would have guessed there were three ships. We have a few good leads and hope to have a positive ID on the name and history of this ship soon.

Edit: I could not get the images to load they are at

Another great day on the lake. I hope tomorrow is just as productive.

For what it is worth we were up at Madison Park yesterday and I swear vis was 15 feet below 30. Even shallow there was much more ambient light than usual.

I just got back from two dives in the lake and at one point I could barely see my fin tips. 25 feet sounds pretty sweet right about now

I was there for one and a half of those dives- vis sucked; we had, at best, 5 feet of vis today.
