Whidbey Island Critters
Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Although listed in Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest book as Burrowing Aeolid, Flabellina sp. 1,
it is still not described and instead of Flabellina, it will most likely be named Cumanotus fernaldi.
But since the papers are not published, it remains still only as Cumanotus sp. Will keep you posted

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Wow! Are they called "burrowing" because they are normally under the silt? I have never seen anything remotely like that.

That would be my guess.LCF wrote: Are they called "burrowing" because they are normally under the silt? .
Encounter with octopus is always a treat, regardless how many times it happens...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Thank you Bob for the compliment, it means a lot coming from a fellow dive addict
And Lynne, and I grin when I can add a new critter to my list. Few days ago I was taking
pictures of Hedgpeth's Sapsuckers which all sudden appeared in great numbers on the
muck seafloor at Lagoon Point canal and when I viewed the photos on my computer
screen, I discovered a little slug which I never saw before, another Sapsucker ! Of course,
I had to go back and search for it. It took me a while. 44 degree water in depth between
4 and 8 feet.:

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
This pier was part of now defunct Mutiny Bay Resort. No public access, the road to the beach
chained off. Now somebody decided to built a house there. I asked the carpenters working there
if I could dive off their parking lot. They could care less. Well, I found lot of empty, shallow
sandy bottom, some Eel grass patches, few Sunflower stars and one Lewis Moonsnail, two Hooded
nudibranchs and some Brooding anemones. I was hoping for the pilings to be covered with sea life,
since there were not touched for years, but found only few barnacles. So I will not mark it as my
new dive spot on Whidbey ...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Jan, first of all, you're the only person I know who can do a dive where there is nothing to see and come back with a whole webpage about it.
Secondly, those photographs just make me ache with envy -- the lighting, the sharpness, and the wonderful dark contrasting background are just fantastic. Someday . . . !

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Nice work Jan. That one shot at the bottom of the second picture is perfect! Looks like a dead leaf.
I guess in order to see these guys I'll have to dive Lagoon point one of these days cause they sure aren't on my side of admiralty inlet
Where do you dive over there? It looks like a private community?

Flying to San Diego for family Christmas (no diving involved )
looking out of plane window, I realized we are not so different from
underwater critters. Or I just suffer from diving withdrawal
