Halogen to LED conversion of a UK D8?

Post by DiverChris »

I have two Underwater Kinetics D8 rechargeable lights which I purchased in 98 and 2000. I love the brightness, durability and width of beam. I am not super fond of the yellow color of the light beam and have occasionally wanted a little longer burn time. I would love to be able to convert to LED without buying a whole new system. Is this even possible? Would I be able to maintain the wide beam with enough intensity to get the job done?

It would be nice if it were as easy as switching the bulbs.

Any information on how to do it, where to get the parts, and general comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
-Chris

They have a LED kit for the c 8 so I'm pretty sure they would for the d

Seems they don't. I might be able to adapt a T-6 led to that unit But I would need to see the light to see if it would work. If you already have the rechargeable kit you have a 30 watt bulb?

Yes, it is a rechargeable with the 14 watt and 30 watt Xenon lamps and a 3-way switch to choose between brightness during the dive. Love the light but the yellow tint isn't great for the photos.

I will post some pictures tonight.

Thanks!

OK, Now I understand. The zenon bulbs are very yellow. My LED's are very white. Then better than some HID's I just need to see what the measurements are to see if I can make an adapter and figure out what it would cost. I haven't seen one of the rechargeables with the dual bulb setup so I need to figure out how they have it wired.

I can see why you would want to salvage the lights having put all that money in those recharge kits but I cant understand why you would want to mess with those big bulky HEAVY pistol grip lights. It could probably be done but it could get expensive and you'll still be fighting those big lanterns. Also you need to consider that those batteries are more than ten years old and won't last forever.

Really good points. The conversion would need to be really cheap to be worth it. It sounds like that isn't the case. Thanks for the great information.

What is your preferred primary light? Is it one you built? Do you build lights for others? Do you have a picture and cost?

Thanks,

Where have you been??? I though every one on the board knew about my lights?? I have been building lights for fellow divers for quite awhile now and a large number of club divers are using my lights. Just search Dusty light on the forum or mention you are looking for a reasonably priced can light. I have no dissatisfied customers.

I am sorry but this is just not true :rawlings:

I was VERY dissatisfied. I had to buy a second one for my GF after getting mine. This costs 2x as much as only having one :taco:

I have a dusty light and love it it is like going from a wet suit to a dry suit make the dive so much better.and brighter. I dive with seaverl people who ve those pistol lights and the dusty light drowns them out great lights. And dusty stands by his product. The service after the sell is second to none :notworthy:

Thanks Dusty. I did a search and failed to locate any photos of a Dusty Light. Will you post one or more here?
