I'm fond of saying that I'll be as big an asshole as the situation requires. This situation requires it, big time, and we all need to be as big ones as we possibly can. Especially if he's taking mother octos on eggs. Absolutely disgusting.

Thank you Bob for making this public. Hopefully the dive community can do something about this, because I think I speak for everyone when I say this is NOT cool

The something the diving community can do about this is make Cove 2 a reserve.

There are enough non-profits and clubs diving this site on a very regular basis, we should work together and see if becoming managing agency/sponsor of this site is possible, or encourage the city to do so. Randy, you know more about this stuff than I do.

Maybe this will be the catalyst the community needs.

Incidentally, pardon my ignorance, but I thought GPOs were protected?

+1. Just look at the game regs in regard to Keystone. It's an underwater game sanctuary and you see large fish and octos there for that reason.

Okay everyone, I want to make it first very clear that "Calen Mayer" is not the person we are looking for. Please do not harass or contact this person.

That being said, I did a little digging and found the guy. I don't feel comfortable naming names here publicly for several reasons, but rest assured he is a shining example of a human being in every way. I will call around to the local dive shops and see if I can at the very least have them talk to the guy about not being a douchenugget

Such a beautiful octo . . . this just breaks my heart! I simply cannot understand how someone who is privileged enough to spend time underwater cannot respect the creatures they see. Or their fellow underwater adventurers.

He's not enough of a person to be an asshole. He's an asshalf.

Guys, I am completely disgusted by this, just like all of you. But PLEASE don't talk about doing anything illegal on this site. Murder, assault, and battery come to mind. This problem needs to be resolved some other way.

Morally this is very wrong, what this nitwit did. Legally? The WDFG rules do say you can take a GPO.
Does this puke actually have a valid WA state fishing license? That would be a good thing to find out.
If he does, then he is legal. Not right! Just legal. Contact the local office of the WA State Dept of Fish & Game.
Does anyone remember how fast the dive community reacted to the taking of the sixgill sharks at Cove 2 a decade ago?
The outcry was loud enough that the state enacted an emergency closure of the fishery. Nothing in recent memory (at that time) sparked such a rapid move by the state to shut down the taking of sixgills. We need to do this again re Octopus! I mean state wide! Call your local govt reps! Raise hell about this! Call WDFG and let's see if we can do something. NOW!
If this twit has a valid license...do not harass or attempt to detain him. Doing so may get you in trouble. The law can and does work both ways. Be careful! Do NOT let your emotions get in the way.

So I was able to find this guy in Facebook, and he has a picture of a speargun (among many other guns) and mentions that he uses it "off alki and edmonds underwater park. depends what im going after."

Could THAT get him in trouble, or does he need to be caught in the act? I would assume the latter, but I'd love to have a F&W person question him.
