Small fish in Lingcods mouth?
Small fish in Lingcods mouth?
Seen something today i never seen before.
There was a lingcod mid sized (3ft or so)with its mouth wide open.
in it was a small fish about 2-3 inches long that looked alot like a baby ling.
the big ling was not trying to eat it.
it was still alive and didn't look hurt.
was this some sort of cleaner fish or?
sorry for not having a pic.

Re: Small fish in Lingcods mouth?
We have witnessed what you describe here at Keystone.
All the sightings we recorded were of Scalyhead sculpin inside the Lingcod's mouth
and Longfin sculpin on the outside. Where did you see this? So far only Keystone
and Edmonds reported this.

This was in the Hood Canal at the Pinnacle.the small fish was a greenish\brown color.

Good to know that it appears outside the protected areas too.Don-B wrote:This was in the Hood Canal at the Pinnacle.the small fish was a greenish\brown color.
Since color doesn't mean much when talking about sculpins, we can only guess.

Nope, but the Down Time was there when we pulled up. You must have been gone by the time we got there. During our SI some guys with a really nice aluminum commercial boat pulled up with four divers on board. We talked to them for a bit. They were just leaving when we came up from dive two.Don-B wrote:I was in the Boston Whaler.ORDiver wrote:Hey Don we're you in the aluminum commercial shellfish boat?

Re: Small fish in Lingcods mouth?
I know this is an old thread, but it's as good a place as any to mention something my brother saw last weekend. We were diving the Pinnacle in Hood Canal when he found a squat lobster cleaning a ling. Any one else ever see something like this?
Re: Small fish in Lingcods mouth?
What area and how deep?
The ling I seen was on the east to south-east side about 80ft down.
It was 50-75 feet away from the main wall sitting out in the open.

I'm not sure- we had different buddies. He mentioned it afterwards; he took some pics, but they didn't turn out too well. As an aside, I was surprised how big some of the lings were there- one of them looked like it could eat a small child.
