Natural gas vehicles

Post by Graveler »

Anybody here running natural gas? It's the cheapest fuel on the Market and since supply and demand doesn't really seem to have any affect on prices it's definitely looking like a better alternative...

I rode in a natural gas powered taxi once. First thing it had to do was go get fueled up so it could take us across town. Compressed natural gas has about 29% of the energy density of gasoline. So to take you the same distance you need over 3 times as big a tank. And the tanks have to be round or cylindrical to hold the pressure, and thick. It is stored at the same pressures as scuba air. Where would you put a 30 gallon natural gas tank in a small car? Natural gas is a great fuel for fixed things but not so good for vehicles. It is better than hydrogen which in the real world comes from natural gas. And then think of the energy cost to compress it to 3000 to 3600 psi. The same compressors are sometimes used for natural gas as are used for scuba air. A 12 liter scuba tank full of natural gas would hold the energy equivelent of less than 1 gallon of gas. It's not as cheap as it looks for vehicle fuel.
