Abyss no longer exists as a company, but these regulators consist of two primary parts from two seperate companies that are both still around and thriving. Hence, parts and repairs are no problem. I have verified that a well-known and respected local regulator repair tech - Ken Beckwith - services these all the time.
The 1st stage is made by Poseidon, one of the best-known manufacturer names in tech diving gear. The 2nd stage is manufactured by Kirby-Morgan, the well known commercial diving company. It is the same 2nd stage used in their commercial diving helmets.
The advertising "slogan" for these was that they breathe great at the surface and that only gets better the deeper you go. In the years that I dived these I never had cause to question that. I maintained them well and used them consistantly up until the point that I switched over to diving a Closed-Circuit Rebreather exclusively.
The yellow/green covering on the long hose is also textured. It was used so that another diver in distress would be immediately able to identify the correct regulator to grab in an emergency, and the texture was so that it could also be identified in a low-light or complete loss of light situation. The covering can easily be removed should that be desired.
