It was interesting to watch how fast the Green sea urchins scramble to get away from the small Sunflower star.
Especially the smaller ones.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
I enjoy your wit with the beer bottle. For these specialty ales, Rogue Brewery donates a portion of its proceeds to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. In addition to the Wasted Sea Star, they have had several critter watcher favorites: Wolf Eel Ale, Spiney Lumpsucker Ale, Sea Otter Ale, Whale Ale (in honor of Keiko), and Shark's Tooth Ale. For wreck divers it has Sunken Vessale. Their Newport Brewery is nestled among the aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, and NOAA's West Coast headquarters. At times it shares a parking lot with a dive shop (They seem to come and go.). It's a favorite stop while coastal whale watching.

Curt,
thank you for the info on the brewery. They seem like nice people, supporting good cause while drinking beer looks like a win win thing for the divers and the brewery

Fascinating! I love the photo with the urchins trying to escape the star.
I've only seen the orange patches on the pectoral fins of the tubesnouts in late winter mating coloring. Have you seen that other times, Jan?

Thank you, Lynne.
After looking through my files, only time I have seen Tubesnout displaying orange here on Whidbey is May and June.

So, is this considered an invasive species? It's certainly pretty.
