Cove 2 Quillfish
Cove 2 Quillfish
Found a new critter (for us) today at Cove 2. Wife got a photo - not good, but it is clear enough to identify. Always a good day when you find something new. This guy was about a foot long, about 3/4 inch tall.

Awesome!!! I've only seen 1 in 700 dives
Re: Cove 2 Quillfish
I've never seen one either. Also jealous. Good for you. Do you do REEF surveys?

We have not done a REEF survey before. Sounds interesting. How do you get involved?

Re: Cove 2 Quillfish
Well, glad you asked. Go to www.reef.org and look around the site. You'll get most of the info you need. There are several people who do REEF Fish ID classes if you are so inclined. Or you can just start doing surveys if you feel comfortable doing that. If you only know one fish (and you definitely seem to know more) you can get started. The website also has fish quizzes to help you learn the fish and invertebrates. It doesn't change the way you dive, you just report what you've seen on your normal dive. And reporting is all done online. And, and, and you are contributing to a fish database that is being used by all sorts of people and organizations all over the world. It's a win, win, win situation. And really, really fun. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me anytime. Perhaps we could even do a fish id dive or two together sometime.

Was at Cove 2 today and we found the quillfish again. It was about 50 ft from where we saw it on the 19th.

About every 4 years I seem to find one of these, and enough time has passed that I've forgotten what they are and I make a post to NWDC asking what this weird 'eel' is that I found on a dive...
