July REEF Critterwatcher news

Post by nwscubamom »

Hope you had a great holiday earlier this month and have been able to get in some diving in our nice cool waters while the weather is hot Hot HOT!

Show me the Fishies!
-----------------------------

You've been asking for them - so now I finally kicked it in gear and have posted all 44 fish (along with common name and family) taught in the beginning REEF Pacific NW Fish ID class online - so you can study to your heart's content! This is great for before-class studying, and after-class refreshing. I am working on getting the 46 invertebrates up there next.

Time for Titlow
----------------------

We'll be heading to Titlow Beach this month (Saturday, July 21st) - exploring the bountiful fish and invertebrate life amid the pilings there. Join us - no previous surveying experience needed. Bring something to BBQ on the grill for yourself, as well as a potluck munchie to share with the group. Free 2007 tide guides to those completing surveys compliments of Pelagia Scuba (thanks Mischi!)
RSVP to me if you think there's a chance you might come! More info here:

Challenge yourself
--------------------------

To advance in REEF's experience levels, you need to submit a specific amount of surveys, as well as take the corresponding quiz/exam for each of the 5 levels. To help you study for these, I have posted a list online that you can download. And we have three folks who can administer the quizzes for you - Christy Semmens in the Seattle area, Wes Nicholson Kitsap Peninsula, and myself in SW Washington. If you'd like to take a quiz, just let me know and we'll get it set up. More info here:

Ahoy Matey!
-------------------

Our September 29th boat dives are approaching, so mark your calendars and reserve your spot on either the morning or afternoon boat soon! Dives will be with Pacific Adventure Charters on Hood Canal.

Critter of the Month
---------------------------

Last, but certainly not least! July's poster child is an invertebrate that could be mistaken for a ladies hat. (use your imagination!). See if you can guess what this local Pacific NW resident is:

Happy Critterwatching, and hope to see you soon!
