Jan: Acrux, Rigel,, Antares. What memories. When I sailed these waters 15 years earlier I used those stars to navigate. Were you using celestial navigation, or were electronic aids (Loran, Omega, Navstar) available to you by then? Sperm whales are still on my list of things to be seen. Wonderful

There was no reliable Loran coverage there, we used transit satellites which were few and far apart, had to wait
hours for them to show up, also many times their elevation above horizon wasn't enough to give a good
fix. We had Omega, but it wasn't precise enough for our work. The cartoon shows the stars I used to
shoot with a sextant. Not for our work, just to see how close I can get to the position the guys in the
lab were plotting. Fun. I read somewhere, that they don't teach sextant nav anymore at the Naval Academy.
I hope that is not the case, for the stars and sun might save the day when satellites fail for some unforeseen

Tom, unfortunately, I didn't. 
It was a backpack, low budget trip, Looking at the coastlines, It sure looks promising .
