Yes Jan, we like your favorite dive site. We had a few really low viz dives there in the past that made dive buddy Mark not want to come back, but now he is convinced. For the last day he glued reading lenses in his mask. Before he couldn't see the plethora of little stuff and now can. We will see you there again.

Jesse, I guess that is inevitable since we dive in similar environment. :partyman:

The Wrinkled aka Frilled Dogwinkle isn't always this "wrinkled". It got my attention :)

Maybe he's wrinkled because he's been in the water too long??? :tomnic:

I think I got stung by the last Lion's Mane of the season. Most of them are trashed on the shore, I manage to come across one still trailing long train of stinging threads :(

Well, I'm glad you got close enough to get these amazing photos, but sorry you got stung in the process. Those things HURT!

Hi Jan,

Re: Your post on Nucella lamellosa- I thought you might enjoy this paper with its alternative explanation for the extra sculpturing on some members of the species:

Jan: Your posting on the amphipods brings forth a humorous memory. A professor told us we would be working in the lab late at night, yet be meeting at 5am to catch the low tide the next morning. The drive home was 2 hrs each way. We thought we were smart to bring our sleeping bags. We headed to the beach near the labs and crashed near the driftwood. We didn't consider the beach hoppers. By morning we were thoroughly familiar with amphipods - in our bags, clothes, and sensitive spots. We still laugh at the memory.

And I was happy to find just couple of them ... Well at least I found them on Eel grass, not in my underwear !

THe Lion Mane sting was not that painful, maybe me facial hair protects me somewhat...
But I definitely see more dead ones now...

The education represented by these pages is absolutely astonishing -- and that it is all the work of one man is simply awesome, in the best sense of the word. Thank you, Jan!

With all the bad news concerning the sea stars - I hope the new generation will succeed in preservation of the species.
