an odd growth on a candy stripe shrimp

I found this shrimp at Sechelt Inlet this past weekend. When I first saw it I thought that something was attached to its side, with the photo you can see that whatever it is, it appears to be just underneath the outer shell.

Anyone have a guess as to what this lump is?

I think those are eggs. Greg will know for sure though!

Hi Dan,

I'm guessing it's a parasitic isopod; it seems to be the right shape and that's where they often show up on a shrimp.
OTOH: Greg is the expert.

Speculatively yours,
Alex

I found one similar to that at Northwest Island about a half-dozen years ago. I recall that the growth was identified as some sort of parasite ...

a parasite was my guess, I would have expected eggs to be slung under the body rather than from the side.

interesting to see that the 'parasite' (if that's what it is) is located in exactly the same place in all three images posted here.

Cool find! Andy Lamb's book has an entry on this.

It's a bopyrid isopod- see the entry on it on pg. 13 of my newer book
