The last two pictures look like they are Plainfin Midshipmen. I could be wrong since I have been looking at colorful Hawaiian fish for the last two weeks. I don't have my PNW books with me as I sit in the Denny's in Kona waiting for my flight.

Agreed - Plainfin Midshipmen. Odd looking beasts.

What about the first one. Everyone afraid to take a stab at that one?

I will be brave and say maybe it might be a Buffalo Sculpin. The nose looks a little long, but...

I think Both are the Plainfin midshipmen.

Fun to see on night dives, not so elusive then.

The first one doesn't seem to have the correct dorsal fin to be a Plainfin. It may just go in the UnIDed Swimming Fish Category. I have a bunch of those.

Tough to tell from the angle, but from the general shape, the "T" on the head and the "stripe" along the tail I'd say the top one is probably either a buffalo or scalyhead sculpin ...

That is a great one! When you have the $55 to spend get Andy Lamb's book. Awesome coffee table book, great for looks up... you'll spend hours looking it over.

Also, watch for Janna Nichols (NWScubaMom) Fish ID and Invert ID classes. LOTS of fun, LOTS of information, and will just up your enjoyment of diving a whole ton!
