Anemone ID

Post by Tom Nic »

Need some help ID'ing this Anemone. It is at DIW, and if you've dove the north wall you've probably come across it. It is about 12 inches across and just gorgeous! I'm thinking either Sand-Rose Anemone, Urticina columbiana, or the Fish Eating Anemone, urticina piscivora. If it's a Fish Eating Anemone it is close to the largest it gets as according to Lamb they get to 12" in column diameter. Red oral disc leans this way? The Sand-Rose gets to a metre in diameter, again according to Lamb. I didn't look for the "raised white bumps in irregular rows on a pink column that are distinctive here.

Columbia Sand Anemone for sure.

If you lift up the tentacles and look at its column, you'll find the Columbia Sand anemone has warts!! The Fish Eating is crimson red and very smooth.

Habitat is another clue. I'm not sure what DIW is, but from your photo this anemone is in the sand. Fish eating anemones are usually attached to rocky surfaces and found in rock reef areas, not sandy/cobble bottoms.

Columbia Sand Anemone can get HUGE, but so can the Fish Eating anemones too. (and become Diver Eating Anemones!)

Thanks Janna! Sorry for the shorthand, DIW is Day Island Wall. I will "lift up it's skirt" next time I'm there to get that positive ID... [-X

It was at the base of a short (10' high) section of the wall. The base is rocky, but there is sand there, and that is where this anemone was. The area is fairly rocky so it wouldn't find lots of sand to grow in.

What a beautiful critter!

Thanks Tom! I figured that out later - what DIW was - DUH!

Anyway, the very first time I ever saw one of these, was YEARS ago, at....no other than....DIW! The difference was, it was all pulled in and digesting - no tentacles, just this rounded blob with warts. Really threw me for a loop until someone else told me what it was.

Very cool.

I think this is the same anemone I found on DIW's North wall.
If someone would tell me how to post a pic I will share my pic.

Thanks for the ID ~ I had narrowed it down to 2 types.

the FAQ wrote:Can I post Images?
Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode Image
so ... if my photo's URL is "http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1256/136 ... 9109_m.jpg" ... i would type:

Code: Select all

[img]http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1256/1369943527_71ffe49109_m.jpg[/img]
or, if you're using flickr, go to "all sizes" for the photo (might need to be signed in), pick the size, and copy and paste the HTML given. for my same photo, it looks like this:

Code: Select all

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/thelawgoddess/1369943527/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1256/1369943527_71ffe49109_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="Canadian Sunset"></a>
IMG tagged URL = Image or HTML coded = <a href="" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1256/136 ... 9109_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="Canadian Sunset"></a> (note the 2nd is hot-linked.)

Could someone explain why this just does not seem to EVER work for me? I've tried every slight variation on the seemingly "simple" method for posting pix and EVERY SINGLE time it just lists the url and never shows the pic. Much as I would like to post pix it always ends up in being an exercise in frustration and I've given up ](*,) #-o

sigh....

hi val

post an example of what you're trying to do that don't display correctly, and maybe we can help figure out what's wrong.

val, to use IMG tags your URL needs to be to an actual image file - meaning the URL would end in something like ".jpg" or ".gif" ... that link is to an HTML page.

if you see my 2nd example, using HTML tags, you will see that the first URL doesn't end in ".jpg" and links to an HTML page, but it also defines the IMG SRC or the source of the image (which does end in ".jpg").

here's what you needed (i picked the small version instead of the large one):

Code: Select all

ok, here's the problem: smugmug is using a web technology called "ajax" that makes the image appear in that cool frame that's superimposed over the webpage.

this means that the url you are using is not a direct link to the image itself, but a link to a piece of code telling the browser how to display that image.

what you need to do is right click (or cntrl-click) on the image and select "open image in new window" (or your PC eqivalent).

this should then open the image with an address of:
http://jellyfish.smugmug.com/photos/197636666-L.jpg

which then will allow you to:

enjoy!

ha, ha; guess we're both on it. you don't actually have to open the photo, though - you can just right click and go to properties to get the URL you need.

smugmug actually has a really good page about sharing photos: http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-sharing

LOL. great minds think alike! :partyman:

though this great mind uses a mac, so there's no right-click-properties thingy. yes, that is a technical term.

That's funny, I saw the same anemone at DIW last night, it was huge! I'll see if my pic turned out and post it, too. It was a closeup....I know my overall shot was blurry.

Thanks for the information.
All my pics are on my PC.
I guess if I want to share them here I will have to place them on a public site.

Not something I have ever done.

I was following the process correctly ~ but didn't realize it couldn't be done from my PC.

Val,

Smugmug makes it really easy to share photos and gives you the URLs of your photos easily. All you need to do is go to the photo you like so it's displayed in the main viewing window, then above it click on the SHARE button above that window. It then gives you two options - email or forums, blogs, etc. Obviously, choose the forums option.

Displayed there you'll see URL's to show the entire gallery, a slideshow, and all the various sizes of your photo you want to share.

It's super easy - just cut and paste, and use between the tags in the forum.

Thanks Val!

Gotta love the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Where else can you dive and see adult Yelloweye Rockfish in 20 feet of water?
