Who on NWDC is doing REEF surveys?

I am just curious as to how many people on NWDC are doing, or have done REEF surveys within the past few months? As you know, there is a lag time of several months before the surveys appear on the online database.

So I'm wondering who's doing them? Where are you doing them generally? How many have you done?

Thanks!

- Janna :)

I sent in over 100 surveys in June. Still waiting to see them on the database.

I have a handful to send in from Redondo.

I also have about 20 that I am waiting for to show up from Kona.

Continually doing them. Sent in a bunch a month or so ago. Have maybe 10 to turn in which I'll do once I figure out what all I saw on my California dives and can do those surveys.
Do them almost every time I hit salt water no matter what else I'm doing on the dive. Have done over 400 I think-I'd have to check.

Just checked the REEF website and it looks like they are caught up as far as May. Didn't have any data from June up through August.

And I've done 419 up til then. Woo hoo! Whew! I'm tired.

I've got a bunch already turned in...

Mostly from Puget Sound sites...a handful from CA.

I still have some dives that I need to turn in surveys for...but haven't found time to bubble them yet. (I keep track of critters with my divelog software, so I could bubble them at any time and have the same accuracy as I did the day after my dive.)

I haven't checked the data base lately to see if all of mine are included. Also, I haven't looked into surveys for the Indo-Pacific region yet...

I mailed off about 20 or so two weeks back, and have another 11 that I did in Port Hardy this past week. Pretty much do 'em on every dive, unless I'm with students, and currently have around 360 or so.

Although I don't post here much, I do them as well. Mostly from Hood Canal to the San Juans. Not sure how many in total due to the REEF database delay.

This is very exciting to see so many of you participating!

One thing I started doing a few years back was to jot down the survey number (it's the serial number looking thing in the bottom right hand corner) in my dive log. Once I wrote that number in, I knew I'd completed a survey for that dive. And it helped me keep track which ones had been entered into the database.

I'd really like to encourage you to send your surveys in a bit more frequently instead of letting them accumulate. I recently had to do a presentation regarding how many surveys Washington surveyors are doing year to year, but the numbers indicated that it's dropping! I couldn't believe it, because I think we have more than ever surveying now.

Unless they get turned in, they don't get reflected in the database and researchers and scientists can't use the data.

Also we can get a better view of which sites still need more surveys and where we're lacking data.

So turn 'em in!! Don't wait until you have a gigantic stack built up. [-X

This has been a public service announcement. We will now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion...

That's too bad, I hope the actual numbers aren't dropping. BTW, I like the serial number suggestion Janna, I might have to implement that one.
