Diver Death in Juneau

Post by Dmitchell »

We had a diver die here. Don't know much about the incident nor did I know the diver.

Here's the news report which is verbatim the police press release.

Man drowns attempting to secure a sea anchor
A Juneau man drowned near Lena Point yesterday. (Wednesday)

At about 6-16 p.m., Juneau Police received a report of a deceased man found in the water off the south side of Lena Beach.

43 year-old Kevin Gallagher was found on the ocean floor several yards from the beach in front of his residence at Lena Point.

He was wearing an aqua lung and dive equipment.

Police say it appears Gallagher was diving alone in an effort to secure a “sea anchor” in front of his property.

No foul play is suspected, according to police.

This is the first diver death around here in about 10 years.

wow; that's a long time! (compare to here anyway.) that sucks about the accident - it's always sad to hear about the loss of a life.

Yes, very sad to hear about this and I agree with Chris, there is not much more to be learned hear other than, let the profesionals do the anchor retrieving.

"Don't dive alone"

My prayers go out to his family.

And we ridicule the reporters who use the term "oxygen tank" when reporting dive accidents. I wonder if he got this "aqua lung" from Jacque Cousteau? Was he diving vintage equipment, maybe not a regular diver, just trying to set up a mooring ball off his own property?

The reporter got it directly from the JPD press release.

I spoke with the officer doing the investigation and I inspected the equipment. The reg was an Aqualung reg and the officer knows nothing about diving so hence the "aqualung" .
