Well Sparky, you got it - they're definitely Painted Anemones.
Urticina crassicornis (which is kinda fun to say!)
They're also called Christmas Anemones and used to have the scientific name of Tealia crassicornis.
What I like about these guys is they can come in sooo many color variations.

Hello Sparky, when you will run for the position of the Emperor of the World, I will vote for you. I like the Painted anemones too. Just be careful when you ask the tailors to make your new suit !

but of corse Val this is the main plank in my platformZen Diver 2 wrote:Hey Sparky, when you become Emperor of The World, will you fix it so I don't have to work anymore? I'll give you a free DAN class if you do!

all non divers must work extra extra hard in order to suport the divers of the world.
thus freeing the divers for realy important things that must be done
for example
there are millions and millions, well more then I can count at least
cubic feet of compressed air that must used what with all the compressures in the world pumpping the stuff out like there is no tomorrow .
just who do you think is going to do this the non diver? I think not
and we all know what happens when the fish in the world are left un attended to there own vices , now I ask you is this realy the sorts of things we want going on in our oceans ?
againe I say. I think not
there for it once againe falls to the divers to step up and do the job
of spying and anoyeing the fishes
some one has to drive the point home to the fishes that we are not going to have any of those shnanagins .
and to let them know we know who they are and that we have there pictures
you see it is my postion that these fine folk ( divers ) well need to be feed and clothed along with housed and of corse we all know it is not exatly cheap to out fit a diver these days
some one will have to foot the bill for these fine folk and as tax payers well it is just your duty.as a non diver to make it so these fine people who give so freely of them-selves doing this verry important work are able to do so
and by the way there is going to be free coffie for every one
you will no longer have to pay for that life giving jolt of cafine in the morrning that is just wrong ( had to give the non divers one you know )

Nope...not fish-eating anemones... That would be Urticina piscivora. Here's a picture of a fish-eating anemone from Point Lobos State Preserve in California.
And here's another fish-eating anemone from Point Lobos...showing the base. The painted anemones have a base that is more colored...green and red...that's one of the differences to help with ID.
And I think painted and fish-eating anemones are quite beautiful.
Happy Empororing...
My name is Tom... and I like anemones too...

Metridium...

Anemonae? Not painted.....
Not painted...I'd call it Metridium senile, or the Short Plumose Anemone. (Metridium farcimen is the giant plumose... I occasionally have trouble with the ID of the senile, as it can sometimes look like the juvenile giant...if I remember correctly...
And speaking of anemones... These little guys were fairly abundant in the shallows at DIW.

They were maybe 2 inches across. Haven't ID'd them yet. Any ideas?

I've seen a lot of them in the shallows at Titlow and Redondo also, Tom. Taking pics of them is a nice way to spend your off gassing.
